      1815 MARRIAGE: OH-Newark: John Gavit md 13 July 1815, Alice Smith, who outlived him, along with several children. His son, John Smith, b. 3 March 1826, was a major in the First Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, and was killed at Frederickstown, MO., 21 Oct 1861, being the first Indiana officer who was killed in the Civil War.
