1940 DEATH,BURIAL: MO,Cole Co-Jefferson City: Clem Dirckx died 21 March 1940; buried Riverview Cemetery 26 March

HISTORY: History of Jefferson City pg 421: Clement A Dirckx, for 28 years county clerk of Cole County, was born in this county near Taos. His father Peter J Dirckx, was born in Belgium April 5, 1829. When a youth of 18 he immigrated to America, coming Father Helias, noted pioneer priest of Cole County. Peter J Dirckx settled near Taos and for the remainder of his life lived in that neighborhood. He operated a farm, was a prosperous merchant in Taos, and was postmaster there. He was activfe in Democratic party affairs. He died December 20, 18 86.
Peter J Dirckx was married to Helen Beckel, a native of Germany, who was born November 18, 1833, and died August 23, 1924. She came to America at the age of eight. She and her husband were the parents of ten children, eight boys and two girls.
C A Dirckx, fourth child of Peter J and Helen Dirckx, was born January 16, 1862. He farmed until 1893, then ran a store at Centertown for nine years. He then moved to Jefferson City where he was a city collector for the years of 1905-6. In the election of 1906 he was made county clerk, and served continuously until 1934. This fact, in a county closely divided politically and many officed being held by members of the opposite party, speaks eloquently of his efficiency as a public servant and of the esteem in which he is held by the public.
Mr Dirckx was married June 25, 1895, to Miss Barbara Schubert, a native of this county born at Taos, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Schubert both of whom were born in Bavaria. They have three children. Estella is the wife of Fred Tanner, Jefferson City druggist. (see sketch of Fred Tanner). George C, a graduate of the Missouri state university, is a high school teacher in Los Angeles. He was married to Miss Ruth Wagoner and they have two children, David and Joan. Elsie is now Mrs R D Lewis, her husband being connected with the gas and light compnay of St Louis. They have one daughter, Nancy and live at Webster Groves.
History of Jefferson City pg 105: About 4 miles from Osage City was a settlement of Germans around a small church. As it was established about the time our soldiers were returning from the Mexican War, it was called Taos from a battle in which Donald's regiment was engaged. The leading spirit of this village was Father Helias, a German priest of the Jesuit order. He built up and organized a very strong parish around this small stone church. There is now at the same place a beautiful brick edifice whose spire can be seen for miles around. He was an uncompromising Democrat, and his influence still remains in the parish.
There was a store at Taos at that time owned and kept by Peter Dirckx who was a right-hand man of Father Helias, and his store was Democratic headquarters. He kept, in addition to a stock of general merchandise, a bar where you could get good beer or wine. I never saw a more orderly place. The people do not drink to intoxication, but after one or two friendly glasses return to their homes.
Peter Dirckx raised a large family of boys. A mile or so north of Taos was a brewery of Wagners'. Here the first beer made in the county was brewed. There were two sons of the pineer Wagner, George and Christopher. George was a brewer and later established a large brewery in this city now owned by Moerschel Brothers.

Are you one of his daughters?.. My father has been gone from us now for about 30 yrs. He was only 64 yrs old then. He died suddenly of a stroke, being active, tho' not a well man up to within a few hours of his death. I was young then, with a house full of small children, but I have longed many times to be able to have done something for his comfort, even, give pleasure which he deserved so well. I guess he took real pleasure in his grandchildren tho', and doing for them what he could, as, we do now in ours."
