Sept. 1, 1910 - Oct. 28, 2012 Mary Allen Hardison returned to her Heavenly Father at age 102 on Sunday Oct. 28. A lifelong member of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter day Saints, she had lived a purposely simple life of family, faith and service. She lived by the motto "you are only as old as you wish to be", which she proved when setting a World Record as the oldest female to go tandem paragliding on her 101st birthday. She was born in Mesa, Arizona, Sept. 1, 1910, the seventh of 12 children, to John Seymour and Barbara Phelps Allen, and was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings. She married Waldo Collins Hardison in 1936 and they were blessed with two sons. The small family moved to Vallejo in 1942, when Waldo, because of his experience with copper tubing, was requested to come to work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. She was preceded in death by her husband (1979) and one grandson, Michael (1959). She is survived by her two sons, Waldo Allen Hardison (Bonnie Baker) and Marion Walker Hardison (Andrea Nesbit); 12 living grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great- grandchildren. Mary graduated from Arizona State Teacher's College in Flagstaff Arizona in 1932 and took her first teaching position that same year at the Keams Canyon Navajo Indian Center. Her teaching career continued 39 years, teaching in Mesa and Cherry, Arizona before moving to Vallejo. She worked for almost 30 years as a teacher in the Vallejo School District retiring in 1971. She was presented with an honorary life membership in the California Congress of Parents and Teacher, Inc., the highest honor that can be given to an individual for outstanding service to children and youth by the PTA. She served in her church in many positions, but her 19 years serving the youth gave her the greatest joy. Besides being a loving mother, grandmother, great and great great grandmother and a dear friend, she will be remembered best for her years of service. She was taught to make quilts at an early age and began to do so in earnest after retiring from teaching in 1971. She made and gave away over 1200 quilts with 31 of the ones she made this year going to an orphanage in Africa. What wasn't given to charity was given to someone to let them know that they were loved. It was special to be given a Mary Hardison quilt, as they became known. A family memorial service was held In Bountiful, Utah and another will be held in Mesa, Arizona, when she is laid to rest alongside her husband in early November.

ALLEN, RUSSELL

Russell Hoopes Allen, a 26 year teacher of mathematics at Roy Martin Middle School, died peacefully at his home in Mesa, Ariz., Nov. 13, 2005, at age 91.

He was born in Mesa, Ariz., July 14, l914, to John Seymour Allen and Barbara Ann Phelps Allen, the ninth of 12 children.

Russell grew up on the family farm in Gilbert, Ariz. He was very active in sports at Mesa Union High School, lettering all four years in football, basketball and baseball. He was on two state championship teams.

In 1935, at age 20, he was called on an LDS Church mission to the Samoan Islands. He first served as a cowboy on the church cattle ranch, then served as a school teacher for the rest of his mission. He loved the Islands, the people, and teaching.

Returning home in 1938, he married his high school sweetheart, Eva Webb, in the Salt Lake Temple. He then entered college at Logan, Utah.

Two daughters were born in Logan; Vangie Mae and Loa. After graduation he was one of four teachers at the school in Kirtland, N.M. He was very active in the church, serving in the bishopric and other positions. He coached sports and taught agriculture and shop.

He and his wife, Eva, were active in civic affairs. He really enjoyed pitching softball and winning. Pitching a no-hitter was his joy. Daughters, Rozetta (deceased) and Sandra were born in New Mexico.

The family returned to Logan, Utah, and Russell earned a masters degree. Another daughter, Betty Jean (BJ) was born. In l955, he was principal of Pahranagat Valley Schools in Alamo. He taught agriculture, chemistry and coached the first football team from Alamo. After four years he took a job with Roy Martin Middle School where he taught for 26 years. He retired and then substitute taught for several more years, often challenging his students to arm wrestle. He and Eva took two of their grandchildren (Chris and Rachael Purcell) with them for another church teaching mission to Kiribati (Tarawa) in the South Pacific. In 1993, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. He played a slow-pitch softball game to mark his 80th birthday and received a standing ovation.

Eva died in June 2004. When asked by one of his daughters if he ever felt "teacher burnout." He said, "No, I always found something to love in each and every one of my students." He will be missed.

Funeral services were previously held in Mesa, Ariz., with burial in Kirtland, N.M.

Elma Allen Milano, 93, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 in Mesa, AZ.

Elma was born in Gilbert, AZ on January 10, 1920 to Charles Ashael and Ida Lillywhite Allen.

She was raised in Los Angeles where she met and married her husband, Henri Milano. After their marriage in 1938, they operated a chain of accordion studios in southern California. Following World War II, they moved to Mesa where they founded Milano Music Center.

After Hank and Elma were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, they were blessed with six children. Elma was proud that all of her children and many of her grandchildren were able to work by her side in the music business. All six of her children became proficient accordionists under her tutelage. She enjoyed the family performing as a group for many civic and church functions. She was devoted to acts of service dedicated to community, church, and family.

Elma had a lifelong commitment to "lift the lives of others." She served a four-year term on the Mesa City Council. She also was active on the board of directors for the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, acted as secretary of the Downtown Business Association, as well as the Republican Women's Clubs, Mesa Symphony Guild, Mesa Fine Arts Association, the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW, Soroptimists, and the American Business Women's Association.

Upon retiring from the music business, she served two full-time missions for the LDS church. This gave her opportunity to preach the gospel in Missouri, Kansas, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. After her missions, she then focused on family history and writing her own life story. She authored a series of personal improvement ideas called, "Elma's Lessons in Living" which have been enjoyed and utilized by many. Elma presented her "Family Power Program" and lectured for BYU Education Week in Provo, UT and statewide. During the later years of her life, she also served as Young Women's President and Relief Society President in her local ward.

Elma is survived by her six children and their spouses: Frank Ashael (Bambi Grimshaw), Donna Francene (Jan Pfeifer), Mila Ann (John Linton), Laura Kay (David Smith), Margaret Leona (Dennis Palmer), and Ida Marie (Bradley Anderson). She is also survived by her brother, Lester W. Allen of Orem, UT, and her sister-in-law, Betty Shellington Allen of Mesa, and also 28 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family would like to express appreciation and gratitude to those who attended to her needs and comforted her in her declining stages, particularly her niece Jeanette Allen Langford.

A viewing will be held on Thursday evening, March 28, from 6-8pm at the Bunker's Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. Her funeral will be Friday, March 29, 11:00am at Mesa North Stake Center, 933 E. Brown Road, with viewing prior to services from 10:00-10:45am.

Interment will immediately follow at the City of Mesa Cemetery, Mesa, AZ.

Early Life: Lester was born September 24, 1923, in Los Angeles to Charles Ashael and Ida Lillywhite Allen. Lester was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from Eagle Rock High School in 1941.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Lester met his best friend and eternal companion, Marilyn Murphy, and they were married in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple on December 29, 1943. Lester was commissioned an officer in the Army Air Corp and served during World War II in the Panama Canal Zone. After the war, he graduated with a PhD from UCLA and taught at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. In 1954, he was hired by BYU and worked there as a faculty member for 35 years; excelling as a research scientist, teacher and administrator. During his tenure he served as chairman of the Zoology department, and as Dean of the College of Biological & Agricultural Sciences. Dr. Allen was revered by his colleagues and loved and respected by the thousands of students he taught. Lester and Marilyn moved to Orem in 1955 where they raised their family and developed many close friendships over the years. They were blessed with eleven children. Lester was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. He was called three times as a Bishop, and served missions with Marilyn as his companion to London, Mississippi and Baltimore. He also served at the Seniors MTC and in the Mt. Timpanogos Utah LDS Temple. His greatest legacy was his great kindness and love for all of Gods children. He was meek and gentle, a true disciple of Christ. Lester was a man ahead of his time. As an equal partner with Marilyn, he nurtured children, scrubbed floors and even cooked for their large family, rare activities for men of his generation. Both Lester and Marilyn had a great love of the outdoors and spent many outings together in the mountains of Utah camping, fishing, hiking, hunting and snowshoeing. Lester taught his posterity and many others the wonders of nature and an appreciation for God's creations. He had a great love for classical music, fine arts and sports. Lester spent many hours reading; he especially loved studying the scriptures with Marilyn. He had a singular come home whistle, a unique way of communicating with babies and was known for his infectious and warm smile. Ashael "Lester" Allen returned to his heavenly home March 4, 2014.

Bert Randall Leavitt was born September 29, 1925 in Mesa, Arizona, the son of Joseph Collins and Blanche Allen. He moved to the Gila Valley after he met and married Gracie Booth, of Central, in August of 1981. For several years Bert was employed at Eastern Arizona College where he worked as a groundskeeper.

As a young man, Bert served his country in the United Stated Coast Guard during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Bert later served a mission in Western Canada from 1947 until 1949. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Central Second Ward.

Bert leaves to mourn: his wife of 32 years, Gracie; his son, Joseph; two daughters, Murial Fujimoto and Moneta Jensen; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Bert was predeceased by: his wife, Rosalie Kelly; his mother, Blanche; his father, Joseph; a sister, Barbara Lanier; and a son, Floyd.

Bert entered into eternal life peacefully Sunday evening, March 3, 2013, at his residence with family members at his side.

Mary Ja Neanne Allen Webster our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend and Queen of Crafts joined her husband on June 9, 2013 in her Salt Lake City home surrounded by her children after a brave battle with cancer. On November 8, 1941 she was born to her loving parents, Gove Liahona Allen and Mary Magdalene Pace and had three brothers in Tucson, Arizona. She spent most of her youth in Mesa, Arizona and a few summers in Greeley, Colorado where her parents completed their masters programs. She went to Mesa High School where she acted as the Fine Arts Commissioner, sang in Acapella, was crowned Superstition Queen and never missed a single dance. Her blood truly ran purple and gold. Her favorite activity was spending nights dancing at the Mazona. After high school, she attended ASU and then transferred to BYU where she graduated with a BA. She majored in Art and minored in Journalism. After graduation, she was offered a position at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. She was one of only three candidates to be selected nationally. After her experience at Hallmark, she moved to Salt Lake to pursue her desires of owning her own art business. She rented office space from James William Webster, who she later loved and married. Jim and Ja Neanne eloped to the Laie Hawaiian Temple in 1967. They moved to a house on Second Avenue where their oldest two children were born. They moved to First Avenue where they had three more children and lived the rest of their lives. Ja Neanne was an active member in the LDS Church residing in the Emigration Stake 27th and 27th East Wards. She held many various ward and stake callings in Relief Society, Young Womens and Primary. Her favorite calling was Art Director at Girls Camp. She was active in PTA and was elected PTA President multiple times. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was on the Board of Directors and a committee member of the Days of '47 for 34 years. She made thousands of craft projects for Family Fun Day. She loved and admired her ancestors and never grew tired of learning about them. Her biggest talent was finding a way to connect anyone to Arizona or to her relatives or her friends or her friends of friends relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother Gary. She is survived by her five children: Heidi (Darrin), Hillary (Logani), Jim (Kim), Alex (Janelle) and Amanda (Nate) and her eleven grandchildren: Madison, Toni, Paige, Elizabeth, Allison, Jackson, Eleanor, Caroline, Henry, Suzanne, and Mary Ja Neanne. Ja Neanne believed in standing for the right. The impact of her life cannot be measured by words and will be felt for generations to come. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Huntsman Cancer Institute and also those that took great care of her at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Service for Ja Neanne on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Federal Heights Ward, 1300 E. Fairfax Rd., Salt Lake City. A viewing will be held on Wed. June 12, 2013 from 6-8:00 pm at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple and from 10-10:45 am at the chapel prior to the service. Interment will be held at the Loa Cemetery, Loa, Utah.
