1838 HIST: Hist of NW County Missouri #977.81 H2w, Vol 1, pg 598, Platte Co: County organized 31 Dec 1838, Platte City being the county seat, and was situated on the Platte River and on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR. The Methodists and Primitive Baptists were the pioneers, The Rev James Cox came in 1837 before the County was organized. By 1845 schools began to appear. Some of the institutions still survive.

Rev War & was probably a soldier in American army, although have no records. First home seems to have been Virginia, later to KY, IA, MO, TX & west to OR & WA. Seems to have had a large family, but only known names: Moses & Solomon. Of those who remained in the east & south, know very little.
Tradition: one of the brothers to Texas, fam name still found in parts of TX, NM. One lived in MO-a son, James Buchanon Eads, bn Ind, built famous gov't Eads bridge across Mississippi River-St Louis, MO & ... vast system of jetties at mouth of river keep channel open for navigation. A grandson, James Eads Howe, labor leader & philanthropist-known as "millionaire hobo."
George R Eads met him in Portland OR. Bk "St Louis Child of the River" by Dana Lange, Webster Pub Co & "Lives of Poor Boys Who Became Famous" by SK Bolton, Crowell & Co.
Met a young man from TN-sd mother an Eads-so numerous they dominated politics of their county.
A town in eastern Colorado named Eads.

1844 EMIGRATION: OR Trail-Email Nov 2002, Connie Clapier [Ann M Kennedy of Austin TX]: "Moses Eads arrived in OR in the winter of 1844 with other members of the Eads family. They came on the wagon train headed by Cornelius Gilliam.
The train arrived at the Whitman station at Walla Walla WA (OR Terr) in Nov of 1844 and went on to Oregon, floating their goods down the Columbia River arriving at Oregon City. Moses settled in the Willamette Valley and lived in Yamhill Co.
He is reported to have gone back to Missouri after the death of his first wife, but a second marriage record is found for Moses again in Polk Co OR. Most of his children stayed in Oregon and took up homesteads.
Jan 1955 letter from Roy L Eads to Mary Marks, Eads doc #83. On the back, to George M Eads, Superior Wyoming, from Mary Marks: "My grandmother was sick and doctor ordered her West, so my grandparents, his brother, Moses and family came west in second wagon train from Missouri in 1844. After Moses' wife died, he left his family and went back to Missouri...
Hattie [Gnos of Otis Ore] says there used to be a Rufus Eads around there before her time, also a girl Roy's father raised, that had lost her parents crossing the plains,'Narcissa Jane Marlow' and she is Hattie's mother's mother or her grandmother...
On the other side-Roy says:"...as near as I know 4 boys and a girl. The oldest Isike Eads, Rufus Eads, Silisa Eads, Solemon Marion Eads, my father. I do not know where the girl came in or her name."

Solomon Jr., Elizabeth, Ennes and Catherine [& John Collet written in by Mary Marks] were born after the family came west to Oregon.

Gov't authorities issued a preemptory for them to move & abandon their claims, farms, houses, everything; & the troops at Ft Levenworth followed up the order by expelling those who were not prompt to go. At that time about 20 families composed the settlement, including Solomon Eads. Three of the settler's houses were burned by the soldiers-those of Robert Asher, Charles Cook & Solomon Eads. The treatment these pioneers received was considered an outrage, especially when in less than a year afterwards the country was opened up for settlement."

1844 MIGRATION: Hist of the Eads Family, by Rev Geo R Eads, 1945, pg 2: "...Solomon and his brother Moses, and their families left Missouri in early spring and crossed the great plains and the Rocky Mountains,.. more than 6 months on the road with their ox teams and herds of cattle.
...they could travel only a few hours a day at first because my grandmother was... to have tuberculosis...She recovered her health, however, and was well and strong before the journey's end.
Twice attacked by Indians but beat off the attacks. On Dec 4, 1844, they were at The Dalles, Oregon, where my Uncle Solomon Cave Eads was born.

Solomon moved into Platte area before it was opened for settlement and he was forced to move out. 1840 census shows living by Epaph Gilliam.

Susannah had TB, traveled slowly, recovered & strong by completion. Forded streams, crossed large rivers in wagon boxes (air tight), attacked by Indians twice but beat them off. Near Grande Rounde River Valley, OR, George R Eads says he can see logging chain marks where snubbed wagons on steep hill down to ford river.
Dec 1844, in The Dalles OR, where Solomon Cave Eads born. Couldn't go further because of the snow in Cascades. Rafted downriver and herded cattle on back till at Oregon City (small village of dozen homes)

She is from Kentucky and didn't recognize anything that might connect the families. But she is only starting to hunt up history for their family. She is working at the University... She said before her grandfather died, they spelled it Eades but dropped the last E and in that book I have, the names were spelled with 2 E's. Here are the names from that book [assuming it is the "History of the Eads Family" by Rev George R Eads] Soloman, Abraham, Henry, John and Clark Eades. So it looks as tho they formaly spelled it that way too. She looked at Grandma's picture and said she looked quite a bit like her father...said her people were Baptists but that they hadn't found any link with James Buchanon Eads."

He had a quick temper. He always wore long-Johns (underwear) winter and summer. He said, "What keeps out the cold will also keep out the heat." Everything he did was done quickly and with great energy. He used to set his girls on his lap and have them try to punch him in the nose, but he could always duck their blows."

Asotin Washington: Originally named Has-Hu-Tin (meaning eel) by Native Americans, Asotin was later renamed by early settlers. Because of its mild climate, Asotin, at the confluence of the Snake River and Asotin Creek, is part of the "banana belt" of eastern Washington.
Asotin's historical background is evident in a number of the downtown buildings, including the courthouse, and the beautiful old homes dating back to the 1880's and early 1900's, also there is an historical flour mill, located above the old city park on Asotin Creek. "Francis M Pearson - Truly the west has reason to be proud of her sons, and one of the most enterprising and wife awake business men among them is the estimable gentleman whose name is at the beginning of this article, and it is with pleasure that we are constrained to grant him a representation in this volume of chronicles of the leading men of Grant county. A son of the occident, and one worthy of the boundless west, he has found here the scenes of his labors and the place of his home, believing in its unlimited resources and the conditions of prosperity that nature has so lavishly bestowed for the hand of man.
Yam Hill [Yamhill] county is the native place of Francis M., and his birth occurred in 1860, being the son of Joseph and Ella (Eads) Pearson. The father was a native of St Joseph, Missouri, whence he came across the plains in 1850 to Yam Hill county, which was the native place of the mother. This worthy couple were among the sturdy pioneers of that time and the father now lies buried at Palouse, WA, and the aged mother is still living at Fletcher ID.
At the age of 24, our subject stepped from under the parental roof and began the voyage of life as captain of his own craft. The first venture that was to attract his attention was buying and selling horses, wherein he was successful, and also in the art of agriculture, that he took up at the same time. In 1886 he took a government quarter where he now resides, 20 miles south of Canyon City, near Seneca, and gave his attention to subduing and improving the same, and also to raising sheep. In addition to these industries, his business ability to handle successfully a number of enterprises, and it is but right to say that Mr Pearson is one of the leading business men of this section, being recognized as such by all.
Mr Pearson and Miss Delia, daughter of Samuel S Smith, of Pilot Rock, were married at Pilot Rock, and they have become parents of 5 children: Austa, Olney, Ada, Edna and Fred. Mr Pearson's fine practical knowledge and his capabilities were brought into play for the benefit of his fellows recently, he being chosen stock inspector, and so successful was he in this line that he was chosen as his own successor. Fraternally, he is affiliated with the IOOF, at Canyon City, and is held in high esteem there as well as in all his walk among his fellows. It is of note that Mr Pearson, senior, was one of the active participants in the Cayuse Indian War, and there rendered faithful and valiant service. Our subject was a volunteer in the Bannock and Piute war of 1878 and did good work in the battle of Beasley's mill, near Pilot Rock."

I was young then, with a house full of small children, but I have longed many times to be able to have done something for his comfort, even, give pleasure which he deserved so well. I guess he took real pleasure in his grandchildren tho', and doing for them what he could, as, we do now in ours."
