Uncle Dave's farm is just north of our home farm ( approx. 1/2 mile from the state line. Myrtle inherited the family farm and still lives there. David was in the car wreck that killed his father, J. Riley, but he was not seriously hurt. He died in his sleep at age 54. Ethel's mother was one of the Grandville Hiner family. She was staying with her Uncle George Hiner when she met arried David.

ETHEL S. ARMSTRONG Ethel S. Armstrong, 102, of Staunton and formerly of Moyers, W. Va., died Monday evening (May 22, 1989) at the Liberty House Nursing Home, Waynesboro. She was born July 22, 1886 in Fraatrick Henry and Elizabeth Jane (Hiner) Stover. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Her husband, David Eli Armstrong, died July 29, 1942. She is surivived by two daughters, Myrtle Armstrong of Moyers and Hannah Graham of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; a son, Jack Ray Armstrong of Staunton; two brothers, Stanley of Huntington, W. Va., and George Stover of Belington, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 27 greatgreat grandchildren. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Cemetery, Moyers, by Dr. Woodward D. Morris. Pallbearers will be Paul Thompson, Craig and Barry Armstrong, David and Victor Douglas and Ronald Jr. and Ronald Armstrong. Friends may call at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell and also at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Douglas, 832 Ellen St., Staunton, where she had made her home before entering the nursing home, at any time. Memorials may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 1313 Barterbrook Road, Stauton, VA.

Notes:

When Aunt Viola was about 45 years old she met and married a man from Denver?, Colorado. They were together for about one week-he went back to Denver-she remained working for the Government in Washington, D.C. My mother says he had a couple teenage or older children who may have interfered in some way. Mom doesn't remember his name, but in later years they corresponded frequently with each other. Aunt Viola spent her last years in the nursing home at Franklin, WVa. In the fall of 1985 they had a huge flood in Pendleton County. We were back in WVa. the following June. Picking up Aunt Viola, we took her up the Thorn to the "old home place'. As we went up the Thorn in our little motorhome Aunt Viola looked out the window and commented about 'having a big flood in this place'. When I pointed out the old home place she watched and said' My no, this is not where I was born-the land was all cleared on both sides of the road". She couldn't understand that someone had let the brush grow (Dad and Bob), and that WVa. reclaims her own!! JHA 3/2001.

Riley and Hannah Simmons A. Formerly of Washington, D. C., she was a retired Civil Service employee. Survivors include a sister, Louie J. Kavanaugh of Pendleton Nursing Home; one brother, Dice S. Armstrong of Orem, Utah; and several nieces and nephews A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday (today) in the St Paul Cemetery near Moyers, W. Va. by the Rev. Norman Nilsen. Pallbearers will be nephews. Friends may call at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell at any time.

From JHA-- Mom says Aunt Mattie was married three times. This is a story my dad, Dice, used to tell about Aunt Mattie and her Uncle John Labon Armstrong. The family was gathered together. Aunt Mattie was back fresh from Washington, D.C. wir Nursing degree and Big plans. Dad said Uncle John looked at her and said" Mattie, you remind me of one of those butterflies out there in my barn yard--you will flutter from flower to flower and land on the first cowpie in sight"!!! Dad said she did just that-five times- that none of her husbands were any account!!!!

After their marriage, Berlin and Loula lived at the Carpenter place midway between McDowell and Doe Hill. In 1924 they moved to the Dan Hiner farm at Doe Hill (now owned by the Delbert Rexrode family) located near the WVa. border., where Berlin managed the Jared Hiner farms which were located in Highland, Pendleton, Pocahontas, and Augusta counties. At Jared's death the farms passed on to his daughters, Lura Hook (Burton) and Miss Leta.
In 1939, dad (Dice) started building his homestead on the WVa. side in sight of Uncle Berlins. I spent many hours playing with Glen and Gene. Later, Uncle Berlin bought a farm just south of the Jake Armstrong farm-about 2 miles upriver fromwell. Berlin, a World War I veteran, served on the Highland County Board of Supervisors from 1948-1960. He also served a wide area as an unlicensed, self-taught veternarian. I remember his skill at castrating bulls and horses and spaying heifers.JHA 3/2001.

Uncle Luther moved to Detroit as a young adult. He worked for Hudson Motor Co. After World War II he operated a service station in Detroit. Later, he bought a cottage on Big Wolf Lake, near Lewiston, Michigan and lived there until his death. He and Aunt Pauline visited us in Tucson, Arizona in the early 60's-where I was practicing dentistry. I was moaning about Social Security-he told me to look on the bright side-they were enjoying that Social Security money that I was paying in!!! I was trying to interest him in my church-he told me he would just keep his membership in the Round Church--I asked "Which was that"? He replied-The one where the devil can't corner you!! To my knowledge- he hasn't been cornered yet!! JHA 3/2001

A Tribute to Uncle Luke at his death-------
Luther left home at the age of 16. His first job was a 'horse tender' in a logging camp. The horses were much more valuable than the men in the camps. After leaving there he traveled out to Kansas and worked in the wheat fields.
He settled in Detroit in the early 20's and here he lived, worked, and raised his family until he retired and moved to Lewisston, Michigan, in 1944. Luther owned and operated a Service Station most of the time that he llived in Detroit. He dsell out' and work in the defense plant during World War II.
After moving to Lewiston he worked some as a carpenter. He was an excellent craftsman. He did a lot of remodeling of homes all of his life. Dennis can remember moving quite often when they lived in Detroit, this being part of their incom

Luther had the ability to make use of everything and never threw anything away. His motto probably was" a penny saved is a penny earned".
Luther stayed close in heart to his kin folks. Every summer when the boys were at home they made the trip by car back to Virginia. There were no expressways and a lot of dirt roads, but, they would leave early in the morning from Detroi
k in the valley where he grew up to sleep that night. He brought his boys up to be close to their kin-folks. Luther and Pauliine travelled some in their later years, to California, Florida, and always back to Virginia.
Luther was a strong man. He loved to eat, and he was lucky to have Pauline, who was an excellent cook , for a wife.
His kidneys were his downfall!! They were injured in 1967 before his prostrate operation. He had very little illlness in his life and believed in 'doctoring' himself.
Luther died at a young age of 70. He went to the hospital a strong healthy man and died one week later of kidney failure. He loved nature and his humble way of living kept him close to it.

Subject--INVESTIGATION OF MARRIAGE of Dice and Nina. I always knew I was Legit as Dad told me one time Mom was so prude she wouldn't let him near her for at least a month after they married, but to be certain I went to the Clerk's office in Franklin, Pendleton, West Virginia to check out their marriage license. I knew that Dad and Mom had met in college and taught school for a couple of years and just assumed they were skilled in arithmetic and geography. To my amazement I found the marriage license application record was written in Dad's own handwriting, and not that of the Clerk's. To my further amazement I discovered that my mother wasn't born in Job, Randolph, W.Va. but in Fort Seybert, Pendleton, W.Va. Also, she was born September 3, 1909 and this application was dated in March, 1929, before their marriage on March 30, 1929, YET the application listed her as 21 years of age!!!!! I confronted Mom about this and she said 'you had to be a resident of Pendleton County and have parental consent if under 21 and the Clerk knew Dad was lying'-apparently the reason for Dad filling out the form and not the Clerk!!!! It's quite a shock to find, after 72 years, that my parents aren't perfect either!!! JHA 8/2003.

DICE'S OWN ACCOUNT OF HIS BIRTH.
Born at Moyers, West Virginia early on a frosty morn, January 25th, 1905, the fourteenth child of Jacob Riley and Hannah Simmons Armstrong. My mother had just observed her 45th birthday five days earlier, on Jan. 20th.
Dr. Jones, our faithful and talented country doctor, rode his horse four miles from the little village of Doe Hill, Virginia through a blinding snow storm to be on hand for the occasion. It took all of his skill to save me for a long life eence of many hours, tempered and refined by occasion of joy and very deep sorrow. I was what they called at that time a 'Blue Baby' in a much weakened condition. As a matter of fact, I wasn't supposed to arrive to the Armstrong family. When the 13th child, my dear sister Mabel, was born three years earlier my father closed the Birth Record in the Family Bible by placing his and mother's birth and wedding records following sister Mabels. But, lo and behold, three years later he entered the record of my arrival following the records of their own.JHA2003.
Dad was still telling of his weaning at age 90. He was nearly six years old when grandma, at the age of 51, weaned him. Granny and some of the girls were sitting on the porch steps snitting apples for drying for the winter ahead.. Dad was md kept running up and down along the side of the house yelling' I ain't Ma's boy no more" over and over!!! I never felt sorry for him as I only got to spend 18 months at my favorite place--my mother's breast!!!JHA2003.

Dice attended Shepherd's College and taught school. He later moved to Utah and lived in Orem. He was been a big help in my research into the Armstrong Family History. Dice was also doing some root digging. As a member of The Church ofs Christ of Latter-Day Saints he submitted much of his information the L.D.S. Genealogical Library, Salt Lake City. He gave a nice talk about his father, brothers and sisters at the 1985 Family Reunion. In a letter (September 1985), Dice told me his father, Jacob Riley, played the harmonica. At the 1986 Family Reunion, he was there with his wife and some of his children and grandchildren. He gave us more information on his family and gave me the book "The Saga of Siward - The Armstong Story". In addition to their 6 children Dice and Nina adopted a son, Gary, and raised another boy, Lynn Armstrong, son of James Harvey and Febbie Armstrong. While on vacation in 1989 we spent some time with Dice and Nina. They gave us a tour of Orem and Provo, Utah and took us to Salt Lake City for a tour of the Mormon Temple.
(April 1996) I received a letter from Nina telling me of Dice's death. His passing will leave a large void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. On the back of his funeral Memory Card was this poem written by his daughter-in-law:

From afar a voice has called him, Called him back to greener hills, Called our mountaineer a hunting,
Called him home to sweeter rills. From afar the voice still calls, Sweeter now than ere before, Calling gently, homeward, homeward, Our mountain daddy has crossed o'er.

DICE SAMUEL ARMSTRONG

Dice Samuel Armstrong, the fourteenth child of Jacob Riley and Hannah Catherine Simmons Armstrong was born on January 25, 1905, near Moyers, Pendleton, Co. West Virginia and passed away quielty at his home in Mapleton, Utah on March 12, 199


As a child he attended Lone Oak School near Moyers, West Virginia. He then attended St. John's Lutheran High School in Washington D.C., working his way through school as a taxi-cab driver.
After a stint as a mule skinner in the Texas oilfields, he returned home and attended Shepherd College where he met and married Nina Coral Heltzel at Riverton, West Virginia on March 30, 1929. They attended James Madison University and tau
chool for a brief period of time.
A natural entrepreneur, Dice was soon engaged in farming, livestock dealings, and the saw mill business. He gave employment and hope to many needy families during the depression. Always interested in community and civic matters, he servedresident of Pendleton County School Board.
In West Virginia he was an avid sportsman and the nemesis of many a fox, squirrel, wild turkey, raccoon and black bear.
He taught Sunday School at St. Paul' s Lutheran Church. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1953. His immediate family soon joined also and the family emigration to Utah began. Dice and Nina were sealed for eternn June 1, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. Dice served his church faithfully and filled many positions of responsibility before moving to 1620 S 800 East, Orem, Utah in 1965. He and his wife lived there until November 1995, when they moved to Mapleton to be near their daughter, Patty A. Jenson. In Utah he was active in the real estate business for many years, being the co-founder of both Colonial Real Estate and Provo Real Estate Companies.
He is survived by his wife Nina, two sons and four daughters: James H. (Kay) Armstrong, Elk Ridge, Utah; JoAnn A.(Wallace) Raynor presently serving an LDS Lifestyle Mission in Mainland China, Patty A.(Rex) Jenson, Mapleton, Utah; Sonja A. Cgham, Orem Utah; Martha Lee A. (Dennis Walker, LaBelle, Idaho; Gary E. (Lorraine) Armstrong, Nampa, Idaho. He is survived by his 100 year old sister, Louie Jane Kavanaugh, Franklin, West Virginia, 28 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He was preceded in dearth by an infant son, John Dice Armstrong, who died on December 7, 1940 and 12 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 15, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Hillcrest First Ward Chapel, 1450 S. 800 East, Orem. Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State St. in Orem and alsoy from 10 to 10:45 at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.

John L. Armstrong, 22 of Orem, Utah, died in a Reno, Nevada, hospital of head injuries suffered in an early morning truck accident near Winnemucca, Nevada. He graduated from Orem High School in 1980. He was employed as a coal miner witu Mining Co. near Price, Utah and later became apprenticed as a steam fitter in Nevada. At the time of his death, he was employed in the construction of a power plant near Winnemucca. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.
