HIST,REL,POL: Col & Mont Co Hist & Biog Annals pg 510: Good education,while assisting father in ag work & other business: store,po,mill,acquiring valuable experience. Aft md engaged in lumber bus and kept hotel at Beaver Valley. During this time owned 1/2 doz farms, but disposed of, retaining 20 acres in Catawissa. Then ret'd to home in Beaver Valley, again into merchandising. He soon added coal trade, also being postmaster. 1876 mvd bk to Catawissa, where lived ever since. First home there destroyed by fired 7 Jun 1885, just after insurance expired. Water had just been turned off in town, no fire dept-all went up in smoke. He rebuilt on site a 2-story frame now standing. Also built 2 other homes in town.
1881 bought Zarr farm of 40 acres,laid it out into town lots, called Shuman addition. Over 100 homes built there-became a perm part of town. A fine schoolhouse also built there. 1884 water mains laid into addition. 1885 laid out a new cem on beautiful hill overlooking Catawissa Crk.
