    Morris Phelps was imprisoned, along with Joseph Smith and others, for treason and murder. Morris Phelps, Parley P. Pratt, Luman Gibbs, Darwin Chase, and Norman Shearer were put into a Richmond jail. Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, and others were sent to Liberty Jail.

    Only four prisoners remained in the Richmond jail, including Morris Phelps. Those that were let out on bail and banished from the state. Morris Phelps' wife had been with her husband some days but left without him and, along with her little infant, started for Illinois. Only Pratt and Phelps were to have a trial.
