      Jan Pieterse was a ship carpenter and was active in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church.
      (1) Dutch Reformed Church of New York Bap., 974.7 B4ne Vol 2 pp. His childrens names, bap. dates, & place of birth were listed in pp. 11,15,16 & 20.
      (2) Dutch Reformed Church of N.Y. mgs., 974.7 B4ne Vol I. ((3) Register of Early Settlers of Kings Co. by Teunis Bergen, 974.723 D2b p. 272-3 gives the information on Child # 1's wife.
      . (4) History of Brooklyn, by Henry Stiles, Vol. 1 974.723 H2st, gives the info. on child #1( (5) Old 1st DRC of Brooklyn, N.Y. His't Mss. by A.P.G. Jos Van der Linde, pp.11 & 213 gave what infomation we have on the childrens mgs.
      (6) Houses of Richmond Co. N.Y. mentions Jan Pieterse as one of the early settlers of Gowanus which later became Brooklyn & the first of his family to arrive in America.
      (7) NY bap. 1731-1800 in RDC of NY, 974.7 V2n Vol.3, p.147, lists Saras bap & the witnesses: Frederick Lubbertze & Annetien Jans.

      The ancestor of the Staats family was Jan Pieters, who emigrated from Huysen, Holland before 1640 and settled at Gowanus in Breukelen, Long Island, N.Y.. His first wife Elsje died, and he married secondly May 16 1652 Grietje Jans, and thirdly 15 Nov 1663 the widow of Frederick Jansen. He was still living there in 1698. (info. found in "Houses of Somerset, New Jersey.") The oldest child Pieter is given an Abt Birth date in ( 4)

      He was also known Jan Pieterszen Van Huizen or Staats. (ae 35 10 Jul 1640)
