  • Notes
    • His b. date is deducted from his death date listed in "Bergens, Early Settlers of Kings Co". p.82, 974.723 D2b, where his age at death on 7 Mar 1680 was 42 yrs., thus the b. yr. as 1638.

His birth place & mg. are given in "Croesen- Kroesen Family of Staten Island" by L.J.Roney, NYG&B rec Vol. 75, 974 B2n p. 97-102.He married at NYDC 30 Oct 1661, Neeltje Jans, recorded in 974.7 B4ne Vol. I NYDC Mgs. p. 54.

His death is also listed in "History of Brooklyn" by H. Stiles, p. 428 & in the Flatbush Dutch Church rec., NYHS yr bk 1898. 974 C4h p. 107, 89. " Gerret was a member of the Brooklyn RDC in 1661 ; owned land in Brooklyn where he was on the assessmant rolls in 1675 and 1676. He obtained a patent in 1677 for 160 acres on Staten Island and removed there."

      Wife - Neeltje Jans
Her bap. is listed in DRC of NY bap. NYG&B rec Vol. 2 ,974.7 B4ne p.11 & also in "Bergens, Early Settlers of Kings Co. p. 82, 974 723 D2b. Her parents are given in the " History of Brooklyn" by H. Stiles p.428.
She married (2) Volckert Hendriks Bries,on 31 Oct 1680, Gerret having died on 7 Mar 1680.
She sold the Brooklyn (Gowanus) farm to pay her deceased husbands debts and the children moved to Staten Island, where their father Garret had obtained a patent to 160 acres on the North shore in Sep 29 1677. The father's will was lost in a fire & the whole estate claimed by the elder son Dirck as the heir under the English law . On 2 Feb 1698/9 the younger son Hendrick petitioned to be protected in his rights, left him by his father's will, which had been burned, as he had settled on the property bequeathed him for 12 yrs, since he came of age. A family settlement & conveyances in 1709 released to Hendrick that part of the patent on which his house stood for over a century. A list of information given by the researcher Harriet Stryker-Rhoda.
In Bergens," Early Settlers of Kings Co." he lists 7 children of Gerret Dircksen Croesen & Neeltje Jans , our Dutch researcher says."I would add to the list of children, Neeltje and Trynthe because of interior evidence"; On 3 Apr 1695 Nicholas Backer and Catharine Croeser had a daughter Neeltje bap. at NYDC. The witnesses were Volckert Hendrixen Bries, who was the second husband of Neeltje Jans, wife of Gerret Croesen; the child was being named for Catharine's mother, as was good Dutch practice and consonant with the naming system.
On 22 Apr 1707 at Staten Island, Nisholas Backer had his daughter Trynthe bap. with Gerret Croesen and his sister Neeltje as the witnesses (probably Bro. & Sis. to the mother).
In the 1706 census of Staten Island, Nicholas Backer is listed at age 45, Trinthe (Catharine) Backer is in the place which indicates she was his wife, and there were five children listed for this couple: four girls,Neelthe, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Trinthe; one boy Jacob.
There are 3 bap. for the children of Nicholas Backer and Catharine (Trynthe) Croeser: Neeltje on 3 Apr 1695; Margaret on 11 Apr 1697, both at NYDC; 22 Apr 1707 at Staten Island, Tryntie. The other children are named in their father's will of 15 Jul 1726, proved 27 Aug 1726. (NYW II: 366): my son Jacob Backer; my four daughters, Neelke, Elizabeth, Ann and Catharine; my wife Catharine.
On 20 May 1703 at Staten Island, Henderyck Kroesen had a son bap. with Jacob Crosse & "Tryntje Backers" as witnesses (Tryntje probably sister to the father)
On 18 Oct 1715, Gerret Kroesen had a son bap. at Staten Island with Joris Neeftjes & "Cathareyntje Kroesen" as witness's (Cathareyntje probably a sister to the father
