1950 HISTORY: St Joseph News Press, November 12, 1950: Mrs. Georgia Ann Smith, Milan, Mo., who observed her 100th birthday anniversary, October 12, says she doesn't fee that old. What is her recipe for such a long life: Mrs Smith says she has none. But if she did, it might be hard work.
Mrs. Smith was quite active until last year. Now, she remains in bed most of the day. Her hearing is excellent and she does not wear glasses, although her eyes will not permit her to do fancy work or to read.
She was born in Monroe County, Mo., and moved to Milan, MO., in 1865 where her father opened a mercantile store. She was married when she was 22 years old to William R Smith, a farmer.
The couple moved to Bates County, Missouri, and lived there 6 years. They returned to a farm in the Milan Community where they resided 26 years. The Smiths moved 35 years ago into the house in which Mrs. Smith now lives.
6 of their 9 children are living. They are: Richard and Charles Smith, Woodward, Okla.; Mrs Fleda Curtis, Humphreys, Mo., Mrs. Maude Taylor and Miss Edna Smith of the home; and Mrs. Alma Wilhite, Kirksville, Mo. There are 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. One great granddaughter, Mary Lee Wilhite, observes her 11th birthday, October 12, too (end of quotation.)
