28 January 1949, The Chatham Press, Chatham, New Jersey

Edward Meaken, age 43, of 256 Jackson Avenue, Jersey City was killed when a police car he stole crashed into a tree. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Johanna, and 3 children: daughter age 7, son age 14, and son age 18.

Edward was employed at the Ballantine Brewery in Newark. A police officer noticed a Ballantine Brewery truck driving erratically. The officer followed the truck with sirens on, but the driver did not pull over. The officer succeeded in overtaking the truck and forcing the driver to stop.

After Edward exited the truck, he jumped into the driver's side of the police car and started racing down Main Street. He then smashed the car into a tree, fatally injuring Edward.
