      Mothers of the West,1930, Vol IV, pg 224-5, Missouri: "His preliminary educational training was obtained in the common schools of Browning and Rural schools of Linn County. Vane entered the Browning High School and was graduated therefrom in 1919. The subsequent year, he was engaged in teaching school in Linn County, and made friends for himself by the care and thought he gave to his work, although it was not his intention to remain in educational work but to prepare himself for the legal profession. He matriculated in the Law Dept of the U of Missouri, and was graduated therefrom
      in 1924, with the Degree of Batchelor of Laws, and as a member of Phi Delta Phi the legal Greek letter Fraternity. While in the U, he served as sec of the soph law class, and was a member of the Missouri Debating Club. Another activity of which attracted considerable attention was his management of the campaign of Lawrence DeMuth for the office of the Pres of the Student Body, which resulted in the election of his candidate with a very gratifying majority

      In June, 1923, Vane was admitted to practice at the Bar of Missouri, but he did not begin his practice until after he had secured his Degree. Opening his office then, at Browning, he began a general civil and criminal practice. He built up a wide and valuable connection and won the friendship of men of consequence all over this part of the state.
      One of the outstanding young Democrats of Linn Co, Vane was singly honored by his party. He was appointed City Attorney of Browning in 1924. In April 1925 he was elected to the office of Mayor. In April 1927 he was reelected to succeed himself, his second term of office expiring in April 1929.
      Vane was deeply and intelligently interested in the welfare of his home community and was determined to let nothing stand in the way of its continued advancement.

      1929 HIST: MO,Linn Co-Browning: Browning MO Centennial...pg 146: "Following the disastrous fire of 1929, when he lost all of his law library and equipment, along with other merchants of Browning, he debated as to whether to go into a firm some place else, but decided to reopen an office in Browning."

      1930-1940 HIST: MO,Linn Co: Browning MO Centennial...pg 146: "In 1930, he became a party candidate for Prosecuting Attorning of Linn County and was elected to that office by a large majority. He was re-elected in 1932 and 1934, being the first person to be elected three terms consecutively as Prosecuting Attorney.
      Mr Thurlo practiced law in Brookfield after his term of Prosecuting Attorney ended, from 1936 to 1940..."

      1940 HIST: MO,Linn Co: Browning MO Centennial... pg 146: "In the spring of 1940, he suffered a heart attack. The following fall he went to the Attorney General's Office. During his years as P.A. it was prohibition and he spend long hours and hard work, together with the Sheriff in keeping Linn County free of gambling, boot-legging and other evils that beset a county at a time like this. When he went to the Attorney General's Office, he took with him an admirable record of public service and of honesty and fine integrity. He served as the first Assistant Attorney General under Roy McKittrick and again under J. E. Taylor."

      1945 HIST: MO,Cole Co-Jefferson City: Browning MO Centennial...pg 46: "He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City at the time of his death... he had been loaned from the Attorney General's Office to the Legislative Research Commission to aid in rewriting Missouri's laws to conform with the new 1945 Constitution."

      1945 DEATH,BURIAL: MO,Cole Co-Jefferson City: Vane Clifton Thurlo died 1 July 1945 of a heart attack; buried Jenkins Cemetery

      NOTES: The following information was taken in part from: Mothers of the West,
      1930, Vol IV, pg 224-5, Missouri: Mrs. Thurlo attended the Culver-Stockton College, Canton, MO and the Kirksville St Teachers College. Mayor and Mrs. Thurlo had one son, John Clifton, who was born Aug 31, 1926 and one daughter, Joyce Lorraine, born June 23, 1929.
      In 1930, Vane became a candidatefor Prosecuting Attorney of Linn Co and was elected by a large majority. He was re-elected in 1932 and 1934, being the first person to be elected three terms consecutively. After his terms as the Prosecuting Attorney in Linn, he practiced law in Brookfield from 1936 to 1940.
      In 1941, Vane accepted an assignment in the Attorney General's office, eventually becoming the first Asst Attorney General under Roy McKittrich and again under J E Taylor. At the time of his death, July 1 1945, he was on loan to the Legislative Research Commission to aid re-writing the laws of Missouri to conform with the Consititution adopted in 1945. Vane is buried in Jenkins Cemetery near Browning.
