      STORY-not seen too accurate. Browning MO Centennial BK, 1872-1972 pg 64, called "An Unusual Gift" [From the census above one can see the whole family was already in Sullivan Co...]
      Columbus Thurlo and Kathryn Smith were md on 13 Dec 1867. (Rocheport MO) They came to Sullivan Co to live nr Old Scottsville. The next spring Mrs Thurlo had a letter from her father, Geo Smith, telling her to meet the stage at Buck Horn Tavern. He said he was sending her a present.
      They drove over to meet the stage at appointed time. When they arrived, a black girl, who had ridden with the driver in an open seat, got off. She had worn a white dress and was completely covered with mud & axle grease. They could scarely tell who she was. (Rcds show md Sullivan Co-need to ck out above)
