(3) Documentary History of N.Y. III, 38, by E.B. Callaghn (Early Immigrants) Jans Pietersz & his wife Maria were members of the Dutch church at Bunnik as attested by the fact that they brought letters to New Netherlands on which they were admitted to membership in the Dutch church at Breuklyn, N.Y., 25 Dec 1662. Jans Pietersz Van Deventer came from Bunnik, in the province of Utrecht, with his wife & three children. They sailed on the ship "Hope", arriving in New Amsterdam 8 Apr 1662. A list of the passengers on this ship is given in Holland Society yr bk 1902 p. 20. Jans very soon went over to Brueklyn on Nassau Is., and first settled there (Doc. relating to early colonial settlers on Long Is., Fernow, p. 522 )
Brooklyns great historian & antiquarian, Teunis G. Bergen, in "Early Settlers of Kings Co., N.Y." 1881 p.327 gives the following:" Jan Pietersz Van Deventer the ancestor of the family, emigrated in 1662 from the " Steght" (Bishopric), The Bishopric of Utrecht was very large & included also Deventer in the Netherlands, and may at one time have resided at Deventer in Overyssel....Settled at first at Brooklyn, and from thence removed to New Utrecht, of which place he was appointed Schepen, (a magistrate & councilman, whose authority is more general than today),by Gov. Colve in 1673, where his name appears on the assessment roll of 1675 & where he & his wife were members of the D. R. Church in 1677. Owned plot no. 5 in yellow Hock (Bay Ridge) as early as 1677.,which he sold Nov 17 1680 to Hendrick Mattyse Van Pelt. Bought 14 May 1682, of Claes Claesen Smith his farm in New Utrecht, as per Lib. II of conv. p. 132 & which his heirs sold Sep 1694 to his son Pieter Jansen for 6000 gl. in 1687 He took the English Oath of allegiance at New Utrecht."
