  Mortimer Johnston and Washington Milton Johnston War Records Mortimer was a private in the 1st Company F and 2nd Company E. He was born in Pendleton County, West Virginia and worked as a blacksmith. Washington worked with the Color Guard as a Private in the 2nd Company E.

  Mortimer Johnston was in the southern army under Jones and acted as a scout and mail carrier.He lost a leg in the battle of the 'wilderness'. He was at Gettysburg--later a Captain in the state militia, constable, Justice of the peace, notarlic, and County commissioner from 1872-1881. (from History of Randolph County by Maxwell) He married his second wife, Caroline Pennington and had eleven more children by her. Mary Harter, in correspondence with Anna Lynn Harper, does not believe his parents are John and Maary Wilfong--needs further investigation. JHA 3/2003.
