1925 Obituary of Samuel Meakem 16 December 1925, Jersey Journal, Jersey City, New Jersey Samuel Meakem, of 152 Midland Avenue, died on Monday [14 Dec] at the Hudson County Hospital. He died of a heart attack. The funeral will be held in the home of his sister, Mrs. John McKeon, tomorrow. Samuel was a veteran of the Spanish War and a former boxer. He was known as a "rough-and-ready fighter." He fought a number of 20-round bouts before boxing was legal. Samuel was 44 years old and born in Newark. He lived in Kearny for 30 years. During the Spanish War, he enlisted in the US cavalry. He served in Cuba and the Philippines. He was a fireman. He leaves 3 children: Samuel Jr, John, and Edna. Genealogybank.com |
