Even though my father left us and disappeared when I was three we always connected with his mother , my Grandma Robinson. As a grandma myself now, I can see that that contact was probley due to my mother's diligence. My grandmother told me a little story before she died. After my father left she said I was riding in the car with my Grandpa Robinson, standing next to him in the front. Every time a car went by I would say " Maybe that is my daddy." As sad as that is, I was grateful for that little insight into my life. I know I loved my father, I don't remember him every being unkind. He was just absent in our lives, cheated on my mother, and had horrible depression. Well, back to Grandma Robinson. We must have stayed with Grandma Robinson at times because I can remember sleeping in her guest room upstairs with her handmade rugs covering the floors. They were braided out of old suits she got at thrift stores. They were beautiful and I always coveted them. Grandma always had a bag of dried bread for us to feed the ducks with at a pond nearby. The treat that I really loved were cinnamon covered grahm crackers and white store bought bread. I remember staring up at her many Indian pictures and collections of arrow heads.(these were donated to a local museum when she died) We played in her wonderful back yard. It had alittle stream running through it with a bridge over it. That's how we would get to the garden, which I can remember sitting in eating fresh peas with my big sister Penny.
My happy memories associated with my Grandma Robinson were always a blessing to me. As we all got older we didn't see her as often and after I married we kept in touch by letters....some of which I still have .She wrote wonderful, informative letters. She helped me with my genealogy , reluctantly for some reason. She'd say to me "Look to the future not the past." My father never had much nice to say about my Grandma but all I know is that she was always nice to me. I don't remember much about Grandpa Robinson but Grandma did say to me once, " I was watching Oprah on the t.v. and I think I was verbally abused by my husband." It surprised me and I was sorry for her. She said she loved living alone and was very content in her later years. She stayed very busy with her little store in her basement of out of print books. She bought and sold and was quite known for her knowledge.
These are ramblings of memories by Linda Joye Tunnell granddaughter of Harriette Robinson.
