1774 IMMIGRATION: "Hardy Fam Hist" by Leola Hardy Fleming FHS 929.273 H222f pg 4: "Thomas Hardie age 21 harpsicord maker, came on the ship 'Minerva' from the port of London to Philadelphia. He left Eng Jan 1774. He was an indentured servant. This could be our Thomas, Sr but we have no proof. If so, he would hv bn bn abt 1753 & hs wife wd hv bn abt 70 when Thomas dd & she wd hv bn abt 24 when Thomas Jr ws bn. Most of passengers who indentured themselves to pay for their passage to this country hd to srv 3 yrs but during that time they
were not allowed to marry. It was possible for a srvnt to pay back part of his indenture if they could earn the money. Taken from "Emigrants from England 1774-1776' pg 25 by Fathergill.
Pg 8: "When Thomas Hardy Sr came to colonies frm Scotland he & fam settled in VA, but rcds indicate they lvd in Frederick Co MD, then to Frederick Co VA. The 2 stmnts don't quite agree, but changes in st & cty lines back at that time might explain the situation. Land deeds show that he apparently came to Botetourt Co VA in 1783 & owned more land in 1790. Part of his land was in the area that later formed Alleghany Co VA & some of his children lvd in that county in 1838. He owned land on Patterson Crk & Cow Pasture River in Botetourt Co VA re deeds. His est wasn't settled until 24 Jan 1825 & some of his children hd nt already mvd to TN but do have mgs listed at Fincastle, Botetourt Co VA"

significaance the little community held because Abe Lincoln lived there in his youth, and started his political career in that very little village. With state and federal help, they used some of Abe Lincoln's actual surveying records, and rebuilt the log cabins of the local residents who had left some 100 yrs prior to the renovation. Old records were ressurrected.] Robert M. Johnston was a Whi who voted, always, for Henry Clay, Abraham Lincoln, and that platform of government, which favored commerce, and building national waterways and highways. When the river dried up, and no ships were passing by, there was no money. For several years, the local people lived by the barter system. Many bills were owed to Robert M Johnston, and in turn he owed the storekeeper money. He sued and couldn't collect; the storekeeper sued and couldn't collect. All these records are on file in the "New Salem Frontier Town", Petersburg, IL"
