    NAM:Aeltje Jans, the first dau of Jan Hendricks van Bommel, was four when her mother died & was brought up by her stepmother, Annette Abrahams, with the other children. She was also known as Jans (her father's name); as Aeltje Hendricks (her father's father's name); and as Aeltje Splinters, which was the family name chosen by her stepmother's family (Annatie Abrahams). The Splinters name was fixed in
    use by Abraham who had "married Geertie, a sister of Laurens Wessel". NY Wills Vol II p 240, 241.

    No wills or death dates are found. Since there are no probable relatives as witnesses at the baptisms of their children, it is presumed that neither Wessel nor his wife Geertie had any family in the colony.
    There are numerous references to Wessel Evertszen in the early records of New Amsterdam, like most of the early settlers, he was somewhat contentious & he appears in the court records as a householder, fisher & trader. There is no marriage recorded for Jan Evertsen Bout in NYDC, but he witnessed Bap,'s in the church from 1641 to 1669. He did not witness any baptism of a child of Wessel & Geertie as he would if she had been his daughter or a close relative.
