He resided on the East side of Broad St. near Beaver St. & adjoining his store. He was Schepen for several years & held in high esteem. He went over to Holland in 1660 & left his business here in charge of his wife. Margaret, returning only accassionally ( the Govenor using him as an emissary on several of his trips abroad) After the English conquest he returned once or twice more to Holland & seems after 1669 not to have come back. It was reported that he died in the East Indies. His property was heavily mortgaged to Jean Cousseau, who foreclosed in 1670. Baltthazar de Hart, a wealthy merchant purchased the property in Oct 1670, at a public sale. As the sequel shows, he had become quite intimate with widow Backer. He died the next year 1672 & having never md., left the most of his estate to his 3 brothers Daniel, Matthius & Jacob, having first made provision for his natural son, Matthius; And bequeathed to his" natural son Daniel de Hart, procreated by Margaret Stuyvesant, the house & lot then occupied by him and Elias Provost Smith," &" two great stilling kettles; also 600 guilders wampum annually; of all which the mother was to have the use until their son, Daniel (who had been baptized, 1 Sep 1671) should come of age. Among the Albany records is a petition, dated 29 Apr 1776, of Margaret Stuyvesant, for an examination of her account against the estate of the late Balthazar de Hart, with whom she was engaged to be married, & who in his lifetime made use of her estate.( In the History of Elizabeth, New Jersey p. 248)
A petition to the court by Margaret Backer setting forth that her husband Jacob Backer, about 8 years since, departed from her, leaving her with 3 small children, in a very poor condition, without making any pro-vision for payment of his debts or for the maintenance of his family. She very much doubts his life, not having in several years had any letter or advice from him, but various reports from Holland to the Easr Indies."
