Source (1) Pieter purchased a house in Flatbush in 1661 and died before 15 Oct 1662 . From an application made by Femmetje Hermans to have guardians appointed for the two youngest children on 15 Oct 1662, we learn their names & their ages. Leffert is age 11 yrs. & Pieter Pierterse is 2 & a half yrs. Apparently the father Pieter Jans & his two older children have died in the 2 & a half yrs. between 15 Apr 1660 & 15 Oct 1662. Pieter Jans purchased a house & a lot in the town of Flatbush (which is now within New York city limits),in 1661, as per p. 47 of Liber B of Flatbush records. He was a shoemaker & farmer by trade.

Quoting from (1) NYG&B Vol 66 pp. 302-313, 974 B2n, Haughwout Family Notes "From this Prehistoric-Genealogical sketch it would seem to appear that the Haughwout-Lefferts family of New Netherland was of Drenthe-Overyssel origin and we may therefore tentatively suggest that its Dutch origin for a certain period prior to the emigration of the New Netherland ancestor may be indicated by the following blood line, viz.:
#1Captain Johan or Jan Hagewolt of the infantry who was transferred to Drenthe and commissioned a captain of a troop of horse on Feb 25 1640. He probably had 2 sons, viz.: Egbert Jansen Hagewolt & Jansen Hagewolt.
#2 Pieter Janse Hagewout b. Abt 1621& d. Abt 1662, in Flatbush,Long Island,New York. He Married Femmetje Hermans & they both emigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam in Apr 15 1660.
