Letter from Arnie Hallmark to Jack & Mollie Hallmark re Jimmie's death:
"Dear Uncle Jack & Aunt Mollie:
It is not a cheerful letter that I am starting to you this evening. Upon my return home from work tonight, my wife gave me your letter. I was indeed glad to hear from you and feel sure that I am the world's poorest writer. I do feel that I must get better at it, and shall start right now, with his letter to you.
On June 1st my little Granddaddy joined his other brothers, and family, in the departed world. He felt he had completed his life to the fullest extent. The last day of May, Grandpa got up as usual, and told Uncle L.B. (his oldest son whom he was with that day) that he had completed his work on earth the night before. He spent the day visiting with various members of his family. At 5:00 pm that evening, they called my father that he should come and bring Grandpa to the hospital.
He walked out of the house and to the car, and joked with dad on the 16-mile ride to the hospital. He said he was sick, but he had felt worse many times in his life. I met them at the hospital, joked with him, and he laughed and joked back. He did not suffer. Just went to sleep and passed away in his sleep about 6 hrs after we got him there. He was always very alert, throughout his life, never lost his vision or hearing. Could read a paper as well as nayone. He was buried beside his wife in the Rose Ridge Cemetery at Cove. I might add, he was buried in a white robe, the highest honor of the Mormon Church. He had completed his temple work. He left an unended line of friends, each of who would say, he was one of the finest, most honest men they have ever known. It is a pleasure to carry the name he has so nobly inscribed into this part of the country.
He had grandchildren for pall bearers. All of his children were there, LB, Letha, Bud, Will, Glen, Mildred & Dollie. Also 22 grandchildren & 24 great grandchildren. A family he was indeed very proud of, and one in which he knew ever one, his age, his birthday, and I believe had a picture of all of them.
The rest of Grandpa's family always was in his heart. We talked of you folks so often, and many times, tried to make plans to come and see you. This evening, Aunt Letha drove in from Utah for a few days. She said to tell you she would be sure and write, as soon as she was again settled at home.
I am sending you a picture of Grandpa, that I took only a short time back. Felt sure you would enjoy it, even though it is a snapshot.
All of us here are in the best of health, enjoying another fine Oregon summer. Looking forward to the time when we may come to Texas and look all of you fine people up. I hope this letter finds its way to you and will close in saying not to mourn Grandpa's leaving. He lived a full, wonderful life, complete to the fullest extent. His family felt his job was very well done here on earth. Love to all, Arnold

Was a farmer, then changed to railroad work as a section foreman. Obtained pictures showing James, Isaac and Carrie, Letha, Carrie after to Ore., Aubra and Isaac, and Isaac, Willie and Aubra.
Lake Buchanon - when flooded, had to move 600 or more graves. Pennington Cem has 12-15 Hallmarks buried there, James Minet too, & 2 babies by 1st wife - 6 children. (we only have 7 names of Hallmarks buried there) So many people didn't want them to move cemetery - wanted to build a cement wall around it, but not work. The Hallmarks asked to have the bodies moved right away. Had to move 6 cemeters when building the dam Bought new boxes for each body. Some bodies there many years - had to scoop up darkened dirt & put in casket.
People were paid so little for the land that was taken. The Hallmarks were living along the river, & the state just came & took it. Had a huge pecan orchard (45 acres). Had all the fish they wanted. Couldn't catch any there now. Caught some as big as 60-75 # (Wm Jackson). Caught some by hand. One hung from shoulders to ground. David (sn of Wm Jackson) & Tony (Uncle Ben's boy) had it on a stick & held it on their shoulders. Could see it in the water, as the water cleared--just reached in under the gills & pulled it out. Wm Jackson liked his cold fish--cooked it up first, then put in flour sacks & eat it cold. Molly got tired of it. "I just couldn't take it." Catfish is good cold.
Ed had 3 boys - all dead. 2 girsl, now living Ft Worth. One boy killed on tractor - driving on highway.
    John - had 2 boys - dead
Lindsay, Monroe & Ide living - Doole, near Brady.
Wm Jackson lived Valley Springs before moving to Burnett
Raymond's sister has been a receptionist in Austin - Breckinridge Hospital
Edna Faye Stock (grdau of Lindsay), Charles Stock, 466 Alicia, San Antonio
Eddy & Earl md Peacock girls - Peacock died of heart attacks - 2/9 living.
Wm Raymond, son of Wm Jackson, hit by train & died (see Wm Raymond Hallmark)
Jimmy - Limestone or Bell County - hunted out new country, settled on Llano River. Not much mail then. When rest of family found them, came west too. Everyone came. Grandpa Hallmark - Jack was 16 yrs old. Place called Smoothen Iron Mtn. Grandpa Hallmark and wife (#2), Eveline went off & left the boys to batch. Jan 12, big snow. Their teams worked out, got snow on them, couldn't walk, so had to knock snow off feet. Jack's 16th birthday. spent whole day cleaning snow off team's feet. Bought the land where Stribbling bought. Dee & Jim only ones not found on home near dad. After father's death, all the boys scattered.
Jasper Newton had a big family, lived near Grandpa, near Bastrop County, called Hallmark Prairie. Jas lived in Llano Co & raised a large family. Jasper was James Minet's brother.
(Pam's impression at time of conversation - Mrs WJ Hallmark 83 yrs old, spry, get around, quite a talker, Church of Christ, snuff dipper, very friendly, enjoyed very much)
