Lived there until 1870, when moved to Jeff City and purchased old Gundelfinger Brewery. Became known as C & L Wagner Brewing CO, which was later sold to Moerschel Brewing Co. in 1892. The Wagners established the first ice plant in Central Missouri in connection with the brewery. Thereafter Wagners engaged in business in Colorado Ssprings and then in lumber business in Missouri and Arkansas."

1928 50th WED ANN: Post Tribune, Jeff City Monday, Oct 8, 1928 - 50th Wed Anniversary: "Mr and Mrs Conrad Wagner, 623 East High Street, pioneer residents of this section, are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today. Members of the family have arrived here from various parts of the country, and a banquet this evening at the Missouri Hotel conclude the day's celebration.
Mr and Mrs Wagner, aged 79 and 70 years respectively, have lived in Jeff City a greater part of their married life and head one of the most prominent families of this section.
Seven children were born: Otto and George, twins, died when three months old. The others were Adolph, Edwin, Frieda, Emil and Paul. The first three are married. There is one grand daughter, Miss Ruth, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Adolph Wagner of Jefferson City. Mr and Mrs Edwin Wagner reside in St Louis, Mr and Mrs Wm Herfurth reside in Boise Idaho, as does Emil Wagner. Paul resides in Marshfield, Oregon.
Mr Wagner was born May 1, 1849, nine miles east of Jefferson City near Schuberts, where his father and grandfather settled in seven years before. The National Highway which was then just being completed, ran through this farm. Mr Wagner assisted his father in farming and in the brewery business which they had established on the farm. They resided there until 1870, when they left the farm to come to Jefferson City where they purchased the old Gundlefinger Brewery. The Brewery was then conducted under the name of the C and L Brewery Company until sold to the Moerschel brothers in 1892.
During the years in the brewery the Wagners installed the first ice plant in Central Missouri. They later entered business in Colorado Springs, and in 1902 engaged in the lumber business in Missouri and Arkansas.
Mr Wager was prominent in the progress of Jefferson City in the early days. For twelve years, 1896 to 1908, he served as a stockholder and director of the First National Bank. He was greatly interested in any activities for the advancement of the city and was connected with many such movements. He retired from active business, however, twenty years ago.
Mrs Wagner, nee Theresia C Walther, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Walther and was born at the farm home near the mouth of the Moreau, January 8 1858. She spent her early years on the farm there and was educated in the schools in Jefferson City.
They were married Oct 8, 1878, the wedding taking place on the Moreau and was one of the largest affairs of its kind in those days. Hundreds of relatives and other acquaintances attended from Cole and Osage Counties.
The two well known residents, although advanced in age, are active and in exceptionally good health. Mr Wagner finds time to take frequent trips through the woodlands near here on hunting expeditions. He is one of the most ardent squirrel hunters in the section. Mrs Wagner keeps busy with her house work which gives her great enjoyment.
Hundreds of congratulations were extended to them today by friends in Jeff City and surrounding communities.
All the living children are here for the celebration."

1932 DEATH,BURIAL: MO,Cole-Jefferson City: Conrad Wagner died 21 May 1932, buried in the German Evangelical Cemetery, Death Certificate #15660.
He gave Cemetery land to the German Evangelical Church across the street from his home, located between Washington and Broadway. When the freeway went through, the cemetery was moved to one end of Riverview Cemetery, and everyone was moved.
Children living: Adolph-Jeff City, Edwin-St Louis, Frieda and Emil-Boise, Idaho; Paul-Salem, Oregon; one grandaughter, Ruth-Jeff City. Three brothers: Lawrence-Sedalia; Louis-Denver; Henry-Los Angeles; Mrs. George Peasner.

They bought the brewery in 1870 of Joe Gundelfinger who bought it of Joe Kessler. This was the first brewery in Jefferson City, Kessler starting it in 1845 with production of a barrel of beer a week. The Americans did not drink beer at this time, and the German population was small. He operated only a year or so before selling to Gundelfiner who eventually increased production to a capacity of 27 barrels a day. This is the business now owned by Moerschel Brothers."

The main building took the place of several old buildings which constituted the Wagner Brewery..."

At 7:50 o'clock last night Mr George Wagner, one of the pioneer settlers of this country, died at his home on West Ashley Street. Mr Wagner was 73 yrs of age, and has always been an active and healthy man, until the last few months his helath had been very poor and was ended by his death last night.
Mr. Wagner and family are probably better knownthan any other family in this section of the state, and all who knew the old gentleman can testify to his friendship for all.
He was born at Schwarzach, near the village of Kulmbach, Bavaria, Feb 13, 1821, and with his father and mother immigrated to the United States in 1840 and resided in Baltimore, MD, then Kentucky and Ohio, and settled in this county in 1844. His mother died in 1869 and his father 2 yrs later.
The subject of this biography was reared to farming in his native country, an occupation which he followed in the US until 1844, when he opened a small brewery in Liberty Township, not far from Taos. He was forced to adopt primitive methods in order to operate this enterprise successfully, such as carrying water by hand from a spring a considerable distance from the plant. After operating it for a number of years he purchased a brewery in Jefferson City, which he operated for a number of years, when he retired from the business.
For many years he had been a prominent stockholder in the First National Bank, being rated as one of the welathiest men in Cole County.
He served two years as Sheriff in this county and one term in the city council. For many years he had been an honored member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of this city.
Mr Wagner belonged to that sturdy class of German pioneers upon whose honesty and industry their children and other descendants can look back upon with pride. While a foreigner by birth, he was a firm believer in American institutions and customs. The public school never had a warmer advocate, and, in fact, he not only believed and practiced ideas consistent with a free country and a free people but impressed the same very emphatically on those who came in contact with him. There are hundreds of men yet living in Cole County who can testify to Mr Wagner's liberality and forbearance. It is doubtful if a man in Cole County intended a helping hand to people who needed help as often as Mr. Wagner. Those who knew him intimately will join in saying that a kinder-hearted and more generous man never lived, and he was one who never oppressed the poor nor permitted it to be done.
Mr Wagner has been married three times, but had no children by his first two wives. He married Miss Catherine Wulfrum of this city in 1848, who survies him, and of this mariage thirteen children were born, of which the following are living: Contrad, Lawrence, William W., Henry, Christopher, Louis M and Tressa, the latter now Mrs George Peasner. Christopher is a merchant at Sacramento, Cal., and Louis M is a prominent Joplin (Mo.) attorney. The remainder of the sons are well-known and prominent businessmen of this city.
The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the German Lutheran Church. All the absent relatives of the family have been telegraphed for, and they will be here to attend the ceremonies.

Conrad Wagner is named in the will as executor of the estate. The will was witnessed by Judge Phillip Ott & Mr. O.G. Burch.

1900 HISTORY: The Illustrated Sketch Book and Directory of Jefferson City and Cole County, Pg 374: "George Wagner, deceased, was born in Schwarzach, Bavaria, February 13, 1821, from which place, at the age of twenty, he immigrated to America, and settled on a farm in Cole County, near Osage City. His education was in the private schools of his native town in Bavaria.
In 1846 he built a brewery 2 1/2 miles west of Osage City, this being the first one established in the county. He continued to operate this enterprise successfully until 1870, when he removed to Jefferson City, purchased the plant (now owned by Moerschel Bros.) which he continued to operated until 1886, when he sold to his sons, Conrad and Lawrence, who in turn disposed of their interest to the present proprietors. He was elected Sheriff of Cole County on the Republican ticket in the Fall of 1878 and re-elected in 1880. He served as Alderman of Jefferson City a number of years. He as a member of the Evangelical Centrul Lutheran church and also of the IOOF.
He was united in marriage in the spring of 1849 to Anna R, daughter of Nicholas Wolfrum, a farmer near Osage City, she being a native of Bavaria. Mr Wagner wad the father of thirteen children, of whom seven are living: Conrad is a prominent and wealthy citizen of this city; Lawrence is in Colorado Springs; William W is the popular proprietor of the Monroe House; Henry is in the hotel business in St Louis; Christopher is in San Francisco, CA and Louis is in Denver CO; Katherine is the wife of George Peasner of this city. Mr Wagner was a prominent figure in Cole County and Jefferson City during his successful like, and established what is now on of the most prominent families in the county. His death occurred in this city September 24, 1895, at the age of 74 years. His wife survives him, and is now aged 71 years, making her home with her eldest son, Conrad."

His parents were Paul and Caroline (Seidel) Wagner, who immigrated to America in 1842, and settled in Cole County, Mo., where the father died in 1871, and the mother in 1869.
George Wagner was reared to farming in his native country, and at the age of nineteen, with his brother, Chris Wagner, came to the States, the former going direct to Jefferson City, Mo., whither his brother afterward located. Our subject first engaged in farming, which occupation he followed until 1842, when he opened a small brewery, and has since devoted his attention to that business. He married in Jefferson City, Catherine Wolfrum, who was born in Muenchberg, Bavaria, and came to America with her parents in 1841. This union has been blessed with six sons and one daughter, viz: Conrad, Lawrence, William W., Henry, Christopher, Louis and Thresa, the latter the wife of George Piesner of Omaha, Nebraska. Conrad and Lawrence are partners in the brewery, and constitute the firm of C & L Wagner. William Wagner is the proprietor of the Monroe House of Jefferson City. Henry is in the saloon business; Christopher is in the mercantile business in Sacramento CA, and Louis M. is a leading lawyer in Jefferson City. Mr Wagner is a stockholder of the First National Bank, and is quite a prominent man in business circles in Jefferson City. He was formerly quite extensively engaged in farming. He served two terms as sheriff, having been elected on the Republican ticket, and served one term in the city council. During the war he did active and honorable duty in the Home Guards of the State, and he is an Odd Fellow of many years standing. The family worship at the Lutheran church."

Buried on hill overlooking old brewery site, east of Jefferson City. New headstones were placed there by Paul LePage abt 1989 and a small rail fence surrounds the grave site. 1. Letter to Bob from Rudolf Poehlmann in Schwartzach, Germany May 15, 1972: Rudolf's father dead in 1971. Among his things letters written by Paulus Wagner, Cole Co, Jeff City, MO addressed to his great great grandfather, Johan Goetz in Schwarzach. Not sure how close relationship. One letter said both were neighbors. So many old papers in his house. Not find letter for moment.
Letter said 2 brothers and 2 sisters from Goetz family came to USA in 1840. Sister's letter said she was on shore in New York when Wagners arrived. Even mother of Paulus came with them.
Letter said Schwartzach is small town of 500 - dying woolen factory.

LETTER FROM GERMAN HELPS REVEAL DATA ON 1st COLE COUNTY BREWERY:
What would you do if the government came along and slapped a 10 percent tax on your farm products? Would you raise a storm or perhaps move from the country?
You probably would do the first, but you undoubtedly wouldn't move from the country. But there was a farmer in Germany who couldn't stand the idea of such a tax when it was imposed by a feudal type baron back in the early 1840's.
He moved right out of the country, sailing to the United States and settled in Jefferson City. As far as taxes go, he didn't know what he was gettting his progeny into. But when the farmer was in Jefferson City, he didn't go for farming but struck out for living by producing something for which the Germans are even more famous--the production of beer.
He operated the first brewery in Cole County. You could even find it on Highway 50 East, a couple of miles east [it was west] of Schuberts.
The history of this farmer--his name was Paulus Wagner--and his enterprise, was brought to the public limelight last fall when Cole County Clerk William Tellman received a letter from Rudolph Poehlmann, another German farmer and a descendant of Wagner. The letter, written in English longhand, told of Poehlmann's relative--Wagner--who had immigrated to the United States in 1843.
Took letter to LePage
Tellman, who had never heard of Wagner, took the letter to County Recorder Henry LePage. The idea was for LePage to look through his land deed records to find whether there was a record of Wagner ever owning land in the county.
But LePage didn't have to do any research. His memory of the family genealogy goes back generations. Wagner, as it turned out, was his wife's great, great grandfather. A look into the deeds record in LePage's office substantiated what his memory had recalled.
LePage began to dig into the history of his relative. He discovered the date of 1843 was a year off. Actually, Wagner immigrated to the United States a year earlier.
Brewery Now a Cave
The office records show Wagner bought a tract of land now owned by Lorenze and Arthur Mueller on Highway 50 East. LePage talked to the Mueller brothers and the brewery was revealed to him as a cave where Wagner's beer was stored.
LePage theorized that the brewery was operated up to about the time of the Civil War, in the 1860's. Other research uncovered the fact that Wagner's two sons--George and Christopher--were naturalized in 1847. Their descendants can be found working in the businesses of Jefferson City.

As you approach the cellar you see a huge concrete archway extending back 30 feet into the cave. Then you can walk back some 120 feet int the bowels of the hill where Paulus and his help stored beer. With dynamite, they blasted the three large rooms from solid limestone.
The first roon you enter is 30 feet long and just as wide; the second--the largest of the three--is 90 feet long and was where most of the beer was stored; and the third room--much like the first--is about 30 feet.
Serviceable Cellar
The blasting work done by Paulus, his sons and his help, required a knowledge of the underlying strata of the hill. But the impressive thing is the muscle and sweat that must have gone in construction of the subterranean warehouse.
Blasting apparently left a rough, unshapely cavern. But the men later went in with a pick and shovel and shaped it into a serviceable cellar with rock shelves and a ventilating system which consisted of a long pipe running from the third room to the top of the hill.
Not far from the hill is the grave of Paulus Wagner and his wife Kunigunde. The stones are simple, the only inscriptions being the dates of birth and death. Paulus, the marker shows, was born April 20, 1795 and died June 26, 1871, while his wife died eight years later, March 5, 1879. After LePage gathered his information, which by this time had grown to almost voluminous proportions, he returned a letter to Poehlmann in Germany, covering much of the genealogy and history of his "relative."
LePage says another letter from Poehlmann is forthcoming.
Grandchildren Here
Grandchildren of Christopher Wagner living in Jefferson City are Christopher Wagner, Conrad Wagner and Mrs. Emil Schnieder. His great grandchildren living here were identified as Mrs. Henry G LePage, Mrs. Ed Arnett, Roy Schneider, Mrs. Glenn Goe, Mrs. William Nixon and Nelse Addison, Jr.
Alfred Peasner is a great grandson of George Wagner, one of Paulus' sons. Great grandchildren are Ada Peasner, Evelyn Peasner, Mrs. Louis Ott and Adolph Peasner. [Peasner crossed off and Wagner written in]
Another generation removed on George's side are these Jefferson Citians: James Peasner, Ruth Wagner, Mrs. Percy Steppleman, Frederick Miller, and Elmer Ott.
LePage estimates that there are more than 50 relatives of Paulus Wagner living today in Cole County. And in addition to these there are at least 20 others living outside and county and state. And it was the independence of one farmer who disliked a 10 percent tax that brought these people and the first brewery to Cole County.

Christopher Julius Samuel Wagner: the son of Julius Wagner also a grandson of Christopher and Elizabeth.
My great grandfather William names a son Christopher Julius (my Grandfather) also William's brother Julius named a son Chrisopher Julius Samual thus causing some confusion. Christ JS and Christ J were cousins.
5. Elizabeth Grandchildren [MR100] - Louis Scovern, Nellie Noble, Mamie Ferris and Charles Scovern were children of Samual Scovern and Pauline Wagner. Sam Scovern died (I don't know what from) about two weeks before his father in law Christ Wagner was killed in the train wreck, about 5 Dec 1881 since the wreck was 18 Dec 1881. Sam was in his thirties and Pauline died about 10 years later, also a very young woman. They are buried in Wood Lawn, JC MO.
6. Mrs Ed Arnett (Mildren Schneider) [R1622] daughter of Emil and Pauline Wagner Schneider - deceased. Roy Schneider (brother of Mildred) and son of Emil and Pauline, also deceased. Have two sisters still living: Lillian Hunziker - Jefferson City, Angeline Muder - Fairfield, ILL.
7. Mrs. Glen Goe (Florence Miller) still living today in Jeff City (in fact I visited her today-very sound mind). Florence is the daughter of Frederick [R423] and Margaretha Wagner Miller [R180] - also in that article is Fredrick Miller, he was Florence's brother- some spell that Mueller, some Miller - Florence said her parents & Grandparents spelled it Miller.
8. Mrs Wm Nixon (Rosemary Addison) [R422] and Nelse Addison Jr. [R418] (her brother) are children of Nelson Addison and Elsie Wagner - both living in Jeff City today, also have a brother William Addison [R421] living in FL.
9. Mrs. Percy Steppleman [R191] (Jack's mother) is a sister to Elmer Ott - she is a daughter of Louis Ott & Hilda Wagner [R1626].
10. Adolph Peasner - Evelyn no knowledge of Adolph - I wonder if it was a misprint or a mistake on the part of the reporter? By the way, in that same article the death of Kunigunda Wagner is March 5, 1870 - should have been 15 March 1870.

1839 IMMIGRATION: Don Walther, Jefferson City, MO: Thomas and family immigrated in 1839, landed in New
Orleans and came up river to east of Jefferson City MO. Another son may have drowned on way to Jeff City. In Evangelical Parish in Weissdorf, says children "immigrated to N America with parents".

NOTES: Evangelical records show a John C Walther died March 1912 and George W. Walther was appointed executor in 1913. Also a Johann Walther died July 21, 1885 (68 yrs old-born approx 1817). Family?
Don Walther 3/1991: Says that Walther and Wagner were together in business down on dock at Moreau and Missouri River dock. Warehouse built by Walther and Wagner joined him. Commerce down from warehouse, had orchards. John Adam had a house down by Missouri River and floods came. Moved part of log cabin up on hill and built around by Adolph Walther. Thomas built home up on hill, part of which is remaining. The main road to St Louis went in front of home on hill. The railroad tracks went across Ewing property below (where Algoa is now)
by Ewing Station (where reformatory is now).
