Stephen was probably born on the old Dorp Farm near the Northeastern shore of Staten Island. No birth or bap. record has been found for him. Probable reasons are the same as for his father Stephen Martineau. Things get a little confusing in this line for in 1779 there were three Stephen's living on Staten Island: This Stephen(c. 1701-1779 , then about age 75+; Stephen (1727-1801) then about age 52; And Stephen (1761-1822) then age 18.

Stephens bap. 25 May 1679 by a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, across the Narrows in New Utrecht(Brooklyn) rec. is found in the Dutch Reformed Church of Flatbush, Kings Co. N.Y. in the NYHS yr bk 1898, 974.7 C4h, p. 112. & is also recorded in "The Early Settlers of Kings County, N.Y", by Tuenis Bergen, 974.723 D2b p. 201, this record also states that Francois Martino md. Teuntje Martenooy of Flatlands,( Teuntje, another form of Hanna or Ann) had Stephen bap on the date listed above. The two witness's were Jean Belleville & Hester Casier (his wife). On the same day Belleville had his son Philip bap, & the witnesses were Francois Martino & Elizabeth Ravesteijn. The bap. registration notes that parents, witnesses, and children were all from Staten Island. Source:Recs. of the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush,Kings Co. New York, vol i 1677-1720 (New York: The Holland Society of New York,1998), p 391.Stephen died before 1706 as referenced in his fathers will & was not in the 1706 census of Staten Island.
" In the 1706 census of Staten Island a Stephen Martino, a boy, probably living in the family of Jean Belliville, and his wife, according to the placement of the names in that census. At this time the grandson Stephen Martino was the only male Martino living on Staten Island, his father and grandfather both having died." Summation of Dutch researcher Harriet Stryker-Rhoda.
There are no deeds recorded for Stephen, no administration of an estate, hence we must conclude he probably was living & working on his father's estate, clearing land of virgin forest, etc. He had no need to purchase a homesite, for as his fathers only son he would naturally inherit a large share of his father's estate. The probability is that he was interred on the farm as was the custom, since there was no estalished church or cemetery on Staten Island. There is a hiatus in the records of the Dutch churches in Kings county, New York from 1694 to 1706, a period of ministerial transition and civil disturbances. This coincides with the probable mg., b. & death dates of his family.
