Clarence A. (Tye) Nelson Dies Of Heart Attack-
Clarence A. Nelson, 80, prominent Afton citizen, died Saturday, Aug 30, of a coronary occlusion at the Star Valley LDS Hospital. He suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized two days before.
Clarence Andrew Nelson was born Nov 29, 1897 to Danish immigrant parents, Christian and Caroline Nelson at Grover, Wyo.
"Uncle Tye" as he was most commonly called, was the seventh child in a family of nine. Only two brothers survive: Mariner Nelson and Harvey Nelson. Preceding him in death besides his parents were the following brothers and sisters: Henry and Orville Nelson, Minnie Williamson, Lillie Hink, Dora Kimball and Stenie Hurd.
He was schooled at Grover and Afton. His father died when he was only twelve and he set out on his own, herding sheep and working on the freight road to help support his mother.
When still a boy he and Irven Jensen traveled with the Grover Dramatic Company and sang between acts of the plays. Later he acted in the plays and participated with this and other groups entertaining in both upper and lower valleys even after his marriage.
In 1921 he started work in the Star Valley Creameries. He managed the Mutual Plant at Etna for three years and the Kraft Plant in Freedom before coming to Afton. He owned and operated the Bedford Creamery for several years with C.S. Wray. For 30 years he did not miss a day of work due to illness until last spring when he was confined to the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City and the LDS Hospital in Afton for about six weeks.
He has always been a very active and industrious man who was interested in ranching as a hobby. He loved horses, and to ride the green hills and canyons enjoying the beauties of nature. He always had sheep to care for, and the last few years, stock cattle.
He was a volunteer fireman when the Afton Fire Department was first organized. He served four years with the Afton Town Council under Mayor O.L. Treloar M.D. and was serving on the town building committee at the time of his death.
In the church he has worked in the MIA, as a ward teacher, on the budget committee and for 12 years he was stake senior Aaronic priesthood secretary a job he held at the time of his death.
On April 12 1922 his marriage to Eva Lavaun Nield was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. To this union were born three children: Vona Vee Luthi, Neal A. Nelson and Joan Brog. These children and nine grandchildren survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday Sept 2 at the Afton Second-Third Ward Chapel, with the Third Ward Bishopric in charge. Burial was at the Afton Cemetery.

Nelson, Roy and Jenene, Salt Lake city; Mr and Mrs Roy Brog, Blake, Sue,Vrena and Danny, Las Vegas, Nev.; Mr and Mrs Lavor Nield, Montpelier, Idaho; Mr and Mrs Dan Nield, Hyrum, Utah; Mrs Verla Olson, Logan, Utah; Mrs Elenore Nelson and daughter Denise.
