    Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo, pg 3-1: "...In 1852, accompanied by several others, he was engaged to drive cattle from Milan to Sacramento, CA. He spent some time in the gold fields, teaming, mining and pursuing various other occupations. He reportedly purchased a yoke of cattle for $300 on credit and sold them for $700. This was his first business venture, and apparently others were successful as his savings steadily increased until 1855 when he returned home on the same mule on which he had left, and purchased a portion of the land presently held by his descendants..."

    About 1816 HISTORY: Descendants... pg 10: John was but a young boy when his father Silas moved the family back to the Newbury-Newburyport area (probably near other family members) where they had once lived, and then headed west to the newly opened Ohio area. Silas spent about 3 years there before returning to Mass. to move his family to Ohio, about 1816... The marriage of John and other family members took place mostly in Morgan County...

    1822-1839 HISTORY: Descendants... pg 10: " They may have moved away shortly thereafter [marriage] to Marion County about 100 miles northwest. John and Abigail had seven children born in Ohio to them before they loaded their meager belongings in covered wagons and moved west to what is now Sullivan County, Missouri in 1839... They lived in Noble (near Olive), Morgan and Wash. Co., Ohio, prob close to county line or in Morgan Co rather than in Noble... Land had to be cleared for farming & each farm had to be almost totally self-sustaining. There were prob other children born between Alson and David and again between Columbus and Princess.

    John Thurlo came to this country, the first man that even surveyed a foot of land in the country. His head is silvered over with the frost of many winters and he still lives to tell the history of the country in that early day."

    First, it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid out of money or property on hand at my death.
    Second, I will and bequeath to my following named children: Norton Alson Thurlo, David M Thurlo, Silas H Thurlo, Henry H Thurlo, Columbus Thurlo & Princess E Smith, each to have an equal share in the following described real estate, consisting of 100 acres of land described as follows towit: SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 & 50 acres in the W 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec 20 on which is situated my residence & farm, also 10 acres of similar land being E part of the SE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 Sec 17, all in Twp 61 R20 Co of Sullivan St of Missouri. Each to have an equal share in said real estate, which shall be equally divided between my aforesaid children or sold and the proceeds equally divided between them according as a majority of them shall determine.
    And in case either of the above named children die before my death, then his or her heirs to be entitled to and take the interest of the deceased parent. I will and bequeath to my grandchildren, Laura Jolly, Josephine Smith, heirs of John Miles Thurlo each five dollars and to my grandchildren and unknown heirs of Rhoda Knifong, I will and bequeath the sum of five dollars each, and to my grandchildren Laura Newman and John M Newman, heirs of Olive Newman, I will and bequeath the sum of five dollars each, said bequests to my grandchildren to be paid by my executor out of money or property on hand at the time of my death.
    I also will & bequeath all the remainder of my money and personal property, after complying with the foregoing bequests to the above named Alson Thurlo, David M Thurlo, Silas H Thurlo, Henery H Thurlo, Columbus Thurlo & Princess E Smith, to be equally divided between them & their heirs.
    And I hereby constitute & appoint my son Columbus Thurlo to be the executor of this my Last Will & Testament, hereby rattifying & confirming this & no other to be my Last Will & Testament.

    Browning Centennial: Doesn't seem too accurate in some parts:
    Two Thurlow brothers came to America from England. Both fought in Rev. War; one on one side; the other on the other side. One of the boys we do not know anything about. The other lived in New Hampshire. He had 5 boys and 1 girl. The children were: Wes, Dan, Ben, Silas, John and their girl-Louise Still [?]. John left NH when 19-went to Marion Co OH & md Abigail Hussey, 9 children were born-7 in OH, then they came to MO. Columbus and Princess were born in MO. Columbus was the first white child born in Sullivan Co. This was so because Linn Co had included the area, which later divided and Sullivan Co was established. Children:

    1816 HISTORY: "History of Noble Co, Ohio 1887" as taken from "Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo" pg 13: Silas Thorla from Massachusetts, brought his family to his new home, where Olive now is, in 1816. He had been there about two years previously, engaged in salt-making. Mr. Thorla was a man of good general information, and by profession a surveyor.

    1819 HISTORY: "...He was one of the early Justices of the Peace and served also as Co Surveyor of Morgan Co. Silas and Dennis Gibbs were the first Justices of the Peace in Olive Twp, commissioned 18 Aug 1819.
    Silas and Robert McKee were among the first settlers in Olive and Noble County. They had a store in Olive, drilled for salt water and made salt to sell. Robert McKee married Ruth Thorla, Silas's sister [dau? to ck out].

    In the name of God amen I Silas Thurlo of Morgan County and State of Ohio being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say;
    First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Susanna Thurlo all my real and personal estate so long as she shall live subject to the follsowing restrictions (unknown word) legases; first, if she shall ever marry to hold only one third of my real estate and the household furniture of my personal estate; secondly to the executors to rent out my half of the salt works if they see fit until all my just debts is paid after collecting my debts and selling what personal property they shall see fit to spare; third after my debts is paid to give to each one of my daughters a large Bible; that is to Ruth McKee, Susanna Sweatt, Lelior McKee (assumed to Dellia), Rhoda Thurlo, and Loisa (Louisa) Thurlo and if my dear wife should die before Rhoda or Loisa is married they or either of them in that case, to have a good fitting out as either of my daughters that is married and that my dear wife is to divide what and how she sees fit any of my personal property and the income of my real estate between my children and after her death my real estate and what personal property she shall leave undisposed of to be divided equaly between my sons, that is to say, John Thurlo, Daniel Thurlo, Benjamin Thurlo and Silas Thurlo.
    Also I request my executors to give to the support of my father and mother if they ever should come to want in proportion with Benjamin Thurlo and Richard Thurlo their sons a comfortable living and I so appoint my beloved wife Susanna Thurlo and Robert McKee whom I hereby appoint sole Executrix and Executor of my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty one.
