1851 Land Deed for Jonas and Nancy Mary Ann Chapman

12 September 1851, Catawba County, North Carolina

Grantor: Jonas Chapman and Nancy Mary Ann Chapman (wife) of Catawba Co, NC
Grantee: Major Hull (Trustee) of Lincoln Co, NC
Cost: $10
Tract: all of the slaves and furniture that Jonas owns, 4 horses, 12 cattle, all sheep and hogs, and all of the real estate that Jonas owns (3 tracts containing 150 acres, 185 acres, 100 acres respectively). The last tract was willed to Nancy Mary Ann Williams, who is now the wife of Jonas Chapman.

"Jonas Chapman is fully aware of the amount of property he has heretofore improvidently spent as well as of his unfortunate habits, and whereas the said Jonas is desirous of atoning as far as possible for past [w]rongs And whereas he is desirous of securing the ballance of his property after securing & paying off all his just debts for the further protection & support of Nancy Mary Ann Chapman (his wife) and his children. The above property with the exception of so much as has been heretofore deed[ed] absolutely to Major Hull, is in Special Trust nevertheless to the said Major Hull (Trustee) for the sole and separate use & benefit of the said Nancy Mary Ann Chapman and her children now begotten & hereafter born to the said Mary"

Jonas Chapman set up a trust to provide for his wife and children.

In the 1850 census, Jones was listed as a convict. He may have set up this trust before/after his incarceration to provide for his family.
