Madison Park Cemetery, Quincy, Adams, IL, United States

Notes: The Old Quincy Cemetery (now known as Madison Park), is located at the southeast corner of 24th and Maine Streets in Quincy, Illinois. It was the city's second cemetery. Quincy's first cemetery was located on the south half of Jefferson Square, where the County Courthouse stands and was used from 1826 through 1835. No records from that cemetery can now be found.

In 1835, land was purchased for a new cemetery. Many bodies from the early cemetery were moved to the new graveyard, but many other graves that could no longer be identified were left untouched.

The new cemetery block later became known as Madison Square. In 1888, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Quincy Boulevard and Park Association. In April 1891, the Association petitioned the city council to remove the headstones and convert the neglected cemetery into a park. The city engineer was directed to prepare a plat map, showing accurate locations of the graves and the headstones were then laid down flat and covered up. When the Great River Genealogical Society printed the cemetery records in 1993, that plat map could not be found. Children now play in this beautiful spot known today as Madison Park.

A more complete listing of the graves can be found by searching Old Quincy Cemetery Madison Park online.
