Eli Armstrong was born May 18, 1835, the third child of Samuel and Mary (Taylor) Armstrong. On June 7, 1860, he married Elizabeth Ann Bodkin. Marriage records show that Eli was 25 years old and Elizabeth Ann was 19 when they were marriede Rev. George Wine. Elizabeth Ann was born near Palo Alto, July 1, 1840, the daughter of James and Sarah (Hoover) Bodkin. Eli was known as a strong hard working man and lived in a hollow on the east slope of the Bullpasture Mountain in Pendleton County, the drainage flowing into the South Fork of the Potomac, north of Sugar Grove, W.Va. His home was approximately 2 miles southeast of the farm of his son, J. Riley, which is on the east slope of Thorn Mountain, on the Doe Hill-Moyers road. The road to the homeplace runs east at the Virginia- West Virginia state line, off the Doe Hill - Moyers Road. I'm told all that remains of the house are some foundation stones. Ièy2 CONC e. Note by JHA-- (In the mid-1900's this farm was owned by my father, Dice S. Armstrong. Known as 'the Lamb Place' it is now in the Paul Bennett family. JHA 2001)

In the obituary of his son, Jacob Riley, it says Eli served as a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War. I have not been able to locate his name on any muster rolls. Dice Armstrong told me his father told him that Eli worked in the Saltr Mines during the war making gun powder for the Army of the South.

Eli died of pneumonia at the age of 48, on March 8, 1883 leaving Elizabeth Ann to raise their younger children alone and with an iron hand. I am told that in her later years, Elizabeth Ann had somewhat of a bad temper, walked with a cane ad been seen striking out with it when she got angry. If someone tried to walk away before she had had her say, she would use the cane as a hook to hold them until she had said her piece. She made her home with her daughter, Sarah, near Churchville, Virginia before her death, December 19, 1909.

Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong are buried in the ArmstrongHiner Cemetery, on the old Hiner farm, near Moyers, Pendleton County, West Virginia. ELI ARMSTRONG AND HIS DESCENDANTS

    JACOB RILEY ARMSTRONG

Jacob Riley Armstrong was the first child of Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. He was born at Sugar Grove, Pendleton Co. West Virginia, on February 10, l861.
    J. Riley was a country boy who learned to work for a living, being taught by his father, who was considered to be one of the abelest workers and strongest men of that section.
    J. Riley had very little schooling but was an avid reader and became a self educated man of sound judgement, whose advice was sought often by his many friends. He was what we call a self made man and in addition to farming activities, wasested in community affairs.
    J. Riley Armstrong married Hannah Catherine Simmons on December 25, 1881. She was born January 20, 1860, at Sugar Grove, West Virginia.
Riley and Hannah purchased a small tract of land on Thorn Mountain about 4 miles south of Moyers, W. Va. By hard work and good management they somehow managed to eke out a living and reared a large family of 14 children. The children wereght the importance of work, dependability, honesty and thrift. Four of their children passed away at a tender age and the other ten lived to become useful, hard working dependable citizens, who were successful in their chosen fields.
In addition to farming J. Riley was interested in community affairs. He served several terms as Pendleton County Commissioner and one term in the West Virginia State Legislature.
After a successful life J. Riley Armstrong passed away February 17, 1929 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident which happened on Shenandoah Mountain, caused by icy road conditions.
About his mother, Dice wrote: She loved the Lord with all her heart and was a true servant to all. She passed away July 6, 1945. **********

    Hon. J. Riley Armstrong Dies
    From Injuries in Auto Wreck

A great shock was felt thoughtout the county when the sad news was received that Hon. J. Riley Armstrong had died from injuries received in an automobile wreck on Sunday afternoon when on his way from his home at Moyers, this county, to Sta, Virginia.
Mr. Armstrong left his home Sunday afternoon for Staunton, Virginia, accompanied by his son, David. Not far from The Barrel on the west side of the Shenandoah Mountian, on the Jefferson Highway, a considerable sheet of ice was encounteredh caused the Chevrolet touring car in which they were traveling to slide over the road across a twofoot embankment and down the mountain for 250 feet. There it struck a chestnut tree which caused it to turn entirely over and land on its wheels. In turning the top was mashed and it is thought that the steering wheel crushed the chest of Mr. Armstrong, who was driving. With the assistance of the driver of a car coming from Durbin, Mr. Armstrong in an unconscious condition was hurried to the King's Daughters Hospital in Staunton. Shortly there after he regained consciousness and ask his son if he was hurt, and stated that he didn't think he himself was seriously injured. David then went out to get a lunch and upon returning in about a half hour found his father dead. It was thought that a broken rib had caused a ruptured blood vessel which was the cause of death.
The body was brought to the home at Moyers on Monday and on account of the members of the family being at considerable distances from the home, funeral arrangements had not been completed on Wednesday.
Jacob Riley Armstrong, son of the late Eli Armstrong, a Confederate soldier, was born at Sugar Grove, Pendleton County on February l0,1861 and was 68 years and 8 days old, his wife, who survives, was a Miss Simmons, daughter of the late Davmmons, and a sister of Aaron Simmons, of Sugar Grove. He is survived by the following brothers: Jared A., Harvey and Wesley of Doe Hill, Virginia,; William of Mount Solon, Va. and John L. of Harman, W.Va., two sisters, Mrs Martha Crummett, Deerfield, Va. and Mrs. Polly A. Michael, Sangersville, Va. Also ten children survive, Mrs M.A. Howard, Luther R. and Mattie, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Nicholas Toderoff, Buffalo, N.Y., Miss Viola and Miss Elizabeth, Washington, D.C., Miss Louie, Alexandria, Va., Dice, a student at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, Berlin, Doe Hill, Va. and David, at home.
Mr. Armstrong was a self made man, having received his education from the public schools. Starting at the bottom of the ladder he reared a large family and at the same time by his energy and good judgment acquired considerable property as able to live comfortably in his reclining years. In addition to being one of the successful farmers and stock dealers of the county, he took a lively interest in public affairs and could always be found upholding the law and standing out boldly for law enforcement and the improvement to social and governmental conditions.
He first served the public by holding the office of Postmaster at Tressel, West Virginia, for ten years; next serving a four years term as constable in his district; later serving two terms as member of the County Court for Sugar Grove Dis; and in the election of 1926 he was chosen a member of the House of Delegates, serving in that capacity for two years, and in his every act striving earnestly and faithfully to do what was best for the people. It will be recalled, to his credit, and showing his fearlessness and independence in voting, that he was one of four members of the House who refused to be stampeded by the Governor's pet road measure and voted to retain the 8020 clause for the allotment of the state road funds among the counties, a provision which was vital to the interests of this county. **********

NOTE For some reason through the years, the Sarah branch of the Eli Armstrong Family had been lost to the rest of us. Very little was known about her and her descendants until the summer of 1991. We knew she was not married but hads of four of her children. In 1986 Dice Armstrong told us Sarah had a beautiful home on Rt. 250 between Churchville and Staunton, Virginia, and Great Grandmother Elizabeth Ann made her home with Sarah during the last years of her life. In 1987 Clay and Mary Crummett gave Elizabeth Ann Deihl names of some of Sarah's grandchildren. In the summer of 1991, Joe Armstrong saw an article in the newspaper about Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Hupman, who had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The article said Mrs. Hupman was the daughter of the late Arlie and Rachel S. Armstrong. Knowing Arlie was the name of one of Sarah's sons, Joe and Elva went to work and in a very short time had located, talked to or written to many members of this lost branch of our Family. Most of the cousins contacted were very helpful and happy to learn about their connection with the rest of us.

Joe gave a report on his findings to those attending the 1991 Eli Armstrong Reunion, and for the first time, there were several of the Sarah Family at the 1992 Reunion.

    THANK YOU, JOE AND ELVA!!

Sarah Armstrong was born in 1865, the 3rd child of Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong, Sugar Grove, Pendleton Co., West Virginia. As far as we can find, Sarah was never married, but was the mother of 4 children; William Arlie, Jesse L.harles Eli (Charley), and Elva Gertrude (Gertie).

NOTE: We have been told that Sarah was married to a Henry Armstrong, but we have found no proof to document this. Older family members say she was not and had never been married.

We do not know for sure when Sarah made the move from Pendleton Co., West Virginia to Augusta Co., Virginia, but we think it was in the fall of 1892. She owned and lived in a log house atop Middle River Hill on Rt. 250 between Churchville antaunton. The house has been covered with siding since her ownership and occupancy. We do not know if she ever lived at any other location in Augusta Co.
Joe's sister, Georgia Armstrong, remembers staying with Aunt Sarah while recovering from surgery in 1917. She remembers a little about Sarah's children and meeting some of her neighbors. She says Sarah was a very independent person. Shee her own horse and buggy, was good to her during her stay, and was a good cook.
Sarah died September 19, 1922 at the home of her son, Charley and Hannah Armstrong, who lived near by. She is buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Churchville, Virginia.

NOTE: My father, Norman Armstrong, stayed with Uncle Will and Aunt Cora a short time and went to school. Frances, (Will and Cora's granddaughter) was also living there at that time. From the stories he told, Daddy and Joe enjoyed teasin. Daddy told me the reason he had been sent to Virginia to finish that school year was because he had been expelled from school in West Virginia for fighting. It seems the other boy was older and bigger and kept picking on Daddy. He took it as long as he could and then one day whipped the tar out of him. It just so happened the bully was the son of the superintendent of schools.

NOTE: The personal sketches in the following report were copied from the notes used by Joe Armstrong when he gave a report on the William H. branch of the Eli Armstrong Family at the reunion in 1986. Joe sent me a complete update on this family in 1991. ***********

The McKendree Cemetery is located off the side road leading to Seldom Seen and north to Jack Mtn. and Doe Hill approximately midway between Doe Hill and McDowell.

James Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Keisters Hollow, near McKendree Methodistrch, midway between McDowell and Doe Hill, Virginia. They had ten children. After Jannie's death Harvey married Phoebe Jane 'Feebie' Ralston, a widow, and had three more children before Feebie died due to complications in childbirth, in 1925. Havey then married Jessie Simmons--there were no children born to this union.
After his death in 1931, the three children by his second wife, Feebie, were placed in foster homes. My parents, Dice S. and Nina Armstrong raised Lynn Stover. Lynn worked for my dad for many years before striking out on his own in the loggusiness. He was like a father to me, and I love him very much. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were very close and kept in contact with each other. His descendants are now scattered throughout the United States. JHA 2001.

Bur: James Harvey Armstrong was the fifth child born to Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. Not much is known about his early life. We know he was a very hard worker and it has been said he could pitch a haystack faster thane in the neighboring area. He enjoyed riding horses and hunting. He always kept several "coon" dogs. James, "Jim" Harvey Armstrong of McDowell, Virginia, grandson of Harvey, has a dog horn which belonged to his grandfather. Jim sheared over 100 sheep for a local farmer in exchange for the horn. The horn is dated. It is priceless and the only known article remaining from the James Harvey Armstrong estate. It's very fitting that a grandson who bears his name has this horn in his possession. Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Kesters Hollow, near McKendree Church, Doe Hill, Virginia. Harvey and Jannie had ten children. There is some Wilson Family history at the end of this report on James Harvey Armstrong. After Jannie's death, Harvey married Febbie or Phoebe J. Ralson, (her name has been found both ways). They had three children. She died in 1925 due to complications in childbirth with their fourth child, an unnamed son. Harvey then married Jesse Simmons. There were no children of this union and after his death in 1931, the three children by his second marriage were placed in foster homes. The older children, by his first wife, were at this time out on their own. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were still close and stayed in touch with each other. They returned to Highland County when they could, usually staying with Nora, whose door was always open or stopping in Churchville with Florence. Barbara Woods, daughter of Florence, gave a report on her grandfather, James Harvey Armstrong and his descendants at the 1988 Reunion and introduced many of the family members. The descendants of James Harvey Armstrong are scattered through out the United States. At this time (1992) four of Harvey's children are still living in Virginia, 2 from his first marriage and 2 from his second. They remember their father as an honest hard working man, but have only vague memories of their mother. They are proud of their heritage and the qualities of compassion, kindness, helpfulness, and even the stubbornness that has been instilled in them as Armstrongs.

Mr. J. Harvey Armstrong passed to his reward on March 4, 1931, at the age of 62 years and 15 days. He was sick just a few days, death resulting from pneumonia and complications. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and 11 children....l services were conducted Friday at ll a.m. from McKendree church, Rev. L.M. Moffett officiating.....Six of his nephews acted as pall bearers: burial was in the cemetery near by. A very large crowd of people attended the funeral: lots of them relatives as he leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins; he was well liked and will be missed a great deal in his community. He was always ready and willing to do something for others; he was a man people could put a lot of confidence in, for when he said he would do something, it was always done and done right.

    Notes:

As a youth, John travelled to Illinois looking for work and adventure--arriving with only 4 cents in his pocket so the story goes) and found a job feeding cattle. By the early 1890's John had settled near Harman, Randolph, WVa. Harman had become a thriving community with the coming of the railroad, and had much to offer an adventurous young man. He worked in the lumber woods and at one point owned a saloon in Harman, although he was known as a "teetotaler". Before his marriage to Nora Belle Cooper he fathered a child, Effie Mae, by Estelle Roy. After Estelle's death little Effie Mae came to live with John and Nora and was raised as one of their own.
John was prominent in community affairs and politics. He was a member and president of the Board of Education, Dry Fork District, and an active member of the Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee, Dry Fork District , for many yearsn was seldom seen without his hat, except on Election Day, when he went with "hat in hand" to meet and greet the public.John and his brother (my grandfather J. Riley were known as men of great honesty and integrity. Their brother , George Wesley, who was more "spirit"ually inclined, was sent to prison for "moonshining". Grandad was in the State Legislature at the time. He and John worked long and hard to get the sentence reduced to fit the crime!
Johw was a champion fiddle player. He and his son, Norman, with Robert Lambert, played for Saturday night Dances at the "Platform" in Harman. In 1931 and in 1932 John won the "Old time Fiddler's Contest" in Pendleton Counts grandson Bill Armstrong son of Dick now has that old fiddle--Wish I could get my hands on it. According to my dad, Dice S., Uncle John would occasionally bring his fiddle over to J. Riley's home for an all night jam session. Granddad played the harmonica. Dad says his Uncle John's favorite tune was 'The bully of the town", written in 1896. It is also one of my favorites. I play it on the mandolin and must keep changing the words to remain politically correct -the origional made liberal use of the "n" word!!!
My dad also said his Uncle John was very liberal and proficient with his fists, In those days you were always being challenged--esspecially after gaining a reputation!! Dad said a big roughneck challenged him one time and spent several wen the hospital!!
John died at age 60 in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va. due to complications thought to have been brought about from head and/or back injuries sustained in a fall many years before. He is buried beside his wife in the Armg-Cooper Cemetery, on the Louis Mauzy farm, near Harman. James H. Armstrong 2001.

Parents: Daniel & Phoeba (Snyder) Cooper

John Labon Armstrong was born on March 23, 1873, near Sugar Grove, Pendleton County, West Virginia. He was the seventh child of Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. We know very little about his early life. He was 10 years old whs father died and sometime during his youth he travelled to Illinois looking for work and adventure. He got a job feeding cattle and as the story goes, he arrived there with 4 cents in his pockets. I don't know what lured John to Randolph County, but he settled near Harman, in the early 1890's. Harman had become a thriving community with the coming of the railroad, and had much to offer an adventurous young man.

I'm told John was an enthusiastic fox and bear hunter. He worked in the woods, and at one point, although known as a "teetotaler", he was the proprietor of a Harman soloon. He met Estella May Roy of the Red Creek area near Harmanhey had a daughter, Effie Mae, out of wedlock. After John married Nora Belle Cooper, Estella passed away, and they brought Effie Mae to live with them.

On December 9, 1897, John and Nora Belle Cooper were married by the Rev. Asa Harman at the home of her parents, Daniel and Phoebe (Snyder) Cooper, in Harman. A copy of their Marriage License, the County Clerks Certificate and the Minister'urn Endorsement was found on file at the Randolph County Court House in Elkins, West Virginia. The Clerk's Certificate, says the party giving the information was Floyd McDonald on December 2, 1897. Nora Bell's name is listed as "Mary Nora Cooper". In her family Bible, Grandmother wrote her name as Nora Belle.

Nora Belle was born August 4, 1880. Her maternal grandfather was the famous Sampson Snyder, a captain in the Federal Army during the Civil War. More information on the Snyder side of this family can be found in Carrie Harman Roy's book, &aptian Snyder and His Twelve of West Virginia". Nora Belle was a frail woman, and passed away on September 2, 1921. She had been ill for many years and her obituary said she died at the home of her sister, Laura (Cooper) Harper, in Elkins, W. Va. where she had been taken to be treated for "Brain Fever", which now days would have been called Meningitis.

NOTE: In 1995, I asked Freda (Cooper) Yokum, being the eldest granddaughter of John and Nora Belle, what she remembered about our grandparents. Freda sent the following about Nora Belle:
Nora Belle's brother, Hoy Cooper, took Typhoid Fever and none of his family would go to his home to take care of him. They were afraid of getting it too. Nora Belle said she was not afraid and went to nurse him. But in her rundown che did get sick and it affected her body and mind. Nora Belle was kept at home and Freda remembers the room she stayed in. When she got much worse they started with her to the hospital in Elkins. They got as far as Bowden and while they were crossing the river on the old bridge, Nora Belle passed away. This was before paved roads and about half an hour drive yet to Elkins.

The John L. Armstrong family is considered a Randoplh County pioneer family. John was prominent in community affairs and politics. He was for many years a member and president of the Board of Education, Dry Fork District, and an active mr of the Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee, Dry Fork District. Daddy told me Grandfather John always wore a hat. He was seldom seen without it, except on Election Day, when he went with "hat in hand" to meet and greet the public.

John was a champion fiddle player. Two years in a row, 1931 and 1932, he was the winner of the "Old Time Fiddlers Contest" in Pendleton County, West Virginia. His grandson, Bill Armstrong (son of Dick), had the old fiddle and at Bs death it was passed on to one of Bill's sons. Daddy told me he had often played music with his Dad for Saturday night dances at the "Platform" in Harman and at the "Picture Show" during intermissons.

NOTE: Part of the following is from a write up Freda helped do for a fellow who wanted to know about old time fiddlers in the Harman area: Traditional old-time music has been an integral part of Harman coummunity life since its founding. In the 1950's there was appoximately five old-time musicians in the area, but today there are very few. One of the oldest fiddlers that could be traced was John Armstrong (1873-1933). Freda (Cooper) Yokum, Harman Judy and Josie Armentrout remember John coming to their homes to play music. Freda remembers playing the organ with her grandfather when she was a young girl. Her father, Floyd Cooper, taught her to chord the organ and her brothers, Morris, Jack and Eldon, all played guitar, mandolin and fiddle. She recalls her grandfather coming to their house often to play music with them at family gatherings. John played music at the movie therater in Harman along with the Harmans and Coopers. At intermission when the movie reels had to be rewound they would play for the audience. One of John's favorite tunes was "The Bully of the Town".

Before her death, Carrie Harman Roy told me that she too had played music with my Grandfather and it was he who had encouraged her to get her teaching certificate and helped her to get her first teaching job.

John died in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Virginia. In June 1933, his son Dick and Homer Yokum, his granddaughters "intended", took John to the hospital. It was a rough trip over the mountain roads that took sl hours. Later Homer took Freda Cooper, Eva Harman, Ethel Wolford and Madelon Cooper to visit him. On the 4th of July, Aunt Ruby and Uncle Ted took Daddy over to visit. Before they left that afternoon, Grandfather told Daddy to be sure to take care of things at home and that he would be home soon, but he died the next day.

It is thought that death was due to complications from head and/or back injuries which were sustained in a fall many years before. I was told that while working in the woods skidding logs, a team of horses knocked him down and drug him sl yards. John's Death Certificate is filed with the Virginia Department of Health, Divison Of Vital Records, Richmond, Virginia. It states that John entered the hospital on June 8. 1933 and died at 7:22 A.M. on July 5, 1933. It also says, John had a Lumbar Puncture on July 3, 1933. The cause of death is listed as Hematologic Encephalitis and the date of onset is listed as 18 years before death.

Also on John's death certificate is listed some personal misinformation: it says John was married, when in fact he was a widower, Nora Belle had died some 11 years before. It also says John was born March 25, 1864, at Doe Hill, Virginia bl other information says he was born March 23, 1873, near Sugar Grove Pendleton County, West Virginia. John and Nora Belle raised seven children and are buried in the ArmstrongCooper Cemetery, on the Louis Mauzy farm at Harman.

George Wesley Armstrong was the ninth child of Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. He was born May 29, 1879. He married Gertrude Belle Propst on April 1, 1900. They had one child, Mary Mae. Wesley and Gertrude separated but as fas I have learned they never divorced. Wesley died June 18, 1960 and is buried at the Doe Hill Cemetery, Highland County, Virginia.

Gertrude Belle lived to the age of 106. She died on July 7, 1987, and is buried at Doe Hill, Va. I met Aunt Gerty at her 100th birthday party. She had lived in a Virginia Nursing Home for many years but was still very active. For many yearhe rode in the Staunton, Virginia, July 4th Parade.

Wesley lived with Maude Ann Simmons in a common law marriage and they had 10 children, all who go by the name Simmons. "The Simmons Descendants of Pendleton Co.", by Walter Eye, says Maude was born December 1, 1897 and died May 102. She was the daughter of Wm. Edward and Christie Louise (Puffenbarger) Simmons. She is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Sangerville, VA.

I remember Uncle Wes visiting Uncle Dick and Aunt Ruby in Randolph County. He liked to get together with the gang of fox and bear hunters, and I can still see him, in my minds eye, taking long walks around the hill at Aunt Ruby's. He worat and walked with a cane.

My Dad told me that in the late 1920's, Uncle Wes was indicted on felony charges and served time in the Moundsville, West Virginia State Penitentiary. He was sentenced to four years for "moonshining" which was excessive for the crid his brothers, Jacob Riley and John Labon, worked very hard and got the sentence reduced. Tradition says, his still was never found and was hidden in the mountains close to a main road.

When Aunt Viola was about 45 years old she met and married a man from Denver?, Colorado. They were together for about one week-he went back to Denver-she remained working for the Government in Washington, D.C. My mother says he had a couple teenage or older children who may have interfered in some way. Mom doesn't remember his name, but in later years they corresponded frequently with each other. Aunt Viola spent her last years in the nursing home at Franklin, WVa. In the fall of 1985 they had a huge flood in Pendleton County. We were back in WVa. the following June. Picking up Aunt Viola, we took her up the Thorn to the "old home place'. As we went up the Thorn in our little motorhome Aunt Viola looked out the window and commented about 'having a big flood in this place'. When I pointed out the old home place she watched and said' My no, this is not where I was born-the land was all cleared on both sides of the road". She couldn't understand that someone had let the brush grow (Dad and Bob), and that WVa. reclaims her own!! JHA 3/2001.

Mattie was a twin to Hattie. She was a Registered Nurse and worked in Washington, D. C. for many years.
From JHA-- Mom says Aunt Mattie was married three times. This is a story my dad, Dice, used to tell about Aunt Mattie and her Uncle John Labon Armstrong. The family was gathered together. Aunt Mattie was back fresh from Washington, D.C. wir Nursing degree and Big plans. Dad said Uncle John looked at her and said" Mattie, you remind me of one of those butterflies out there in my barn yard--you will flutter from flower to flower and land on the first cowpie in sight"!!! Dad said she did just that-five times- that none of her husbands were any account!!!!

Mattie married Ed Sumner. [Group Sheet]

After their marriage, Berlin and Loula lived at the Carpenter place midway between McDowell and Doe Hill. In 1924 they moved to the Dan Hiner farm at Doe Hill (now owned by the Delbert Rexrode family) located near the WVa. border., where Berlin managed the Jared Hiner farms which were located in Highland, Pendleton, Pocahontas, and Augusta counties. At Jared's death the farms passed on to his daughters, Lura Hook (Burton) and Miss Leta.
In 1939, dad (Dice) started building his homestead on the WVa. side in sight of Uncle Berlins. I spent many hours playing with Glen and Gene. Later, Uncle Berlin bought a farm just south of the Jake Armstrong farm-about 2 miles upriver fromwell. Berlin, a World War I veteran, served on the Highland County Board of Supervisors from 1948-1960. He also served a wide area as an unlicensed, self-taught veternarian. I remember his skill at castrating bulls and horses and spaying heifers.JHA 3/2001.

Uncle Luther moved to Detroit as a young adult. He worked for Hudson Motor Co. After World War II he operated a service station in Detroit. Later, he bought a cottage on Big Wolf Lake, near Lewiston, Michigan and lived there until his death. He and Aunt Pauline visited us in Tucson, Arizona in the early 60's-where I was practicing dentistry. I was moaning about Social Security-he told me to look on the bright side-they were enjoying that Social Security money that I was paying in!!! I was trying to interest him in my church-he told me he would just keep his membership in the Round Church--I asked "Which was that"? He replied-The one where the devil can't corner you!! To my knowledge- he hasn't been cornered yet!! JHA 3/2001

A Tribute to Uncle Luke at his death-------
Luther left home at the age of 16. His first job was a 'horse tender' in a logging camp. The horses were much more valuable than the men in the camps. After leaving there he traveled out to Kansas and worked in the wheat fields.
He settled in Detroit in the early 20's and here he lived, worked, and raised his family until he retired and moved to Lewisston, Michigan, in 1944. Luther owned and operated a Service Station most of the time that he llived in Detroit. He dsell out' and work in the defense plant during World War II.
After moving to Lewiston he worked some as a carpenter. He was an excellent craftsman. He did a lot of remodeling of homes all of his life. Dennis can remember moving quite often when they lived in Detroit, this being part of their incom

Luther had the ability to make use of everything and never threw anything away. His motto probably was" a penny saved is a penny earned".
Luther stayed close in heart to his kin folks. Every summer when the boys were at home they made the trip by car back to Virginia. There were no expressways and a lot of dirt roads, but, they would leave early in the morning from Detroi
k in the valley where he grew up to sleep that night. He brought his boys up to be close to their kin-folks. Luther and Pauliine travelled some in their later years, to California, Florida, and always back to Virginia.
Luther was a strong man. He loved to eat, and he was lucky to have Pauline, who was an excellent cook , for a wife.
His kidneys were his downfall!! They were injured in 1967 before his prostrate operation. He had very little illlness in his life and believed in 'doctoring' himself.
Luther died at a young age of 70. He went to the hospital a strong healthy man and died one week later of kidney failure. He loved nature and his humble way of living kept him close to it.

Subject--INVESTIGATION OF MARRIAGE of Dice and Nina. I always knew I was Legit as Dad told me one time Mom was so prude she wouldn't let him near her for at least a month after they married, but to be certain I went to the Clerk's office in Franklin, Pendleton, West Virginia to check out their marriage license. I knew that Dad and Mom had met in college and taught school for a couple of years and just assumed they were skilled in arithmetic and geography. To my amazement I found the marriage license application record was written in Dad's own handwriting, and not that of the Clerk's. To my further amazement I discovered that my mother wasn't born in Job, Randolph, W.Va. but in Fort Seybert, Pendleton, W.Va. Also, she was born September 3, 1909 and this application was dated in March, 1929, before their marriage on March 30, 1929, YET the application listed her as 21 years of age!!!!! I confronted Mom about this and she said 'you had to be a resident of Pendleton County and have parental consent if under 21 and the Clerk knew Dad was lying'-apparently the reason for Dad filling out the form and not the Clerk!!!! It's quite a shock to find, after 72 years, that my parents aren't perfect either!!! JHA 8/2003.

DICE'S OWN ACCOUNT OF HIS BIRTH.
Born at Moyers, West Virginia early on a frosty morn, January 25th, 1905, the fourteenth child of Jacob Riley and Hannah Simmons Armstrong. My mother had just observed her 45th birthday five days earlier, on Jan. 20th.
Dr. Jones, our faithful and talented country doctor, rode his horse four miles from the little village of Doe Hill, Virginia through a blinding snow storm to be on hand for the occasion. It took all of his skill to save me for a long life eence of many hours, tempered and refined by occasion of joy and very deep sorrow. I was what they called at that time a 'Blue Baby' in a much weakened condition. As a matter of fact, I wasn't supposed to arrive to the Armstrong family. When the 13th child, my dear sister Mabel, was born three years earlier my father closed the Birth Record in the Family Bible by placing his and mother's birth and wedding records following sister Mabels. But, lo and behold, three years later he entered the record of my arrival following the records of their own.JHA2003.
Dad was still telling of his weaning at age 90. He was nearly six years old when grandma, at the age of 51, weaned him. Granny and some of the girls were sitting on the porch steps snitting apples for drying for the winter ahead.. Dad was md kept running up and down along the side of the house yelling' I ain't Ma's boy no more" over and over!!! I never felt sorry for him as I only got to spend 18 months at my favorite place--my mother's breast!!!JHA2003.

    d. 3/12/1996 - Mapleton, Utah
Bur: Orem City Cemetery, Orem, Utah
    m. 3/30/1929 - Nina Coral Heltzel
    b. 9/3/1909-Job, W.Va.
Parents: John William and Cora Anna Heltzel

Dice attended Shepherd's College and taught school. He later moved to Utah and lived in Orem. He was been a big help in my research into the Armstrong Family History. Dice was also doing some root digging. As a member of The Church ofs Christ of Latter-Day Saints he submitted much of his information the L.D.S. Genealogical Library, Salt Lake City. He gave a nice talk about his father, brothers and sisters at the 1985 Family Reunion. In a letter (September 1985), Dice told me his father, Jacob Riley, played the harmonica. At the 1986 Family Reunion, he was there with his wife and some of his children and grandchildren. He gave us more information on his family and gave me the book "The Saga of Siward - The Armstong Story". In addition to their 6 children Dice and Nina adopted a son, Gary, and raised another boy, Lynn Armstrong, son of James Harvey and Febbie Armstrong. While on vacation in 1989 we spent some time with Dice and Nina. They gave us a tour of Orem and Provo, Utah and took us to Salt Lake City for a tour of the Mormon Temple.
(April 1996) I received a letter from Nina telling me of Dice's death. His passing will leave a large void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. On the back of his funeral Memory Card was this poem written by his daughter-in-law:

From afar a voice has called him, Called him back to greener hills, Called our mountaineer a hunting,
Called him home to sweeter rills. From afar the voice still calls, Sweeter now than ere before, Calling gently, homeward, homeward, Our mountain daddy has crossed o'er.
