  	James Madison, Sr. was a prominent Virginia planter, who served as a colonel in the militia during the American Revolutionary War. He inherited Mount Pleasant, later known as Montpelier, a large tobacco plantation in Orange County, Virginia. James eventually acquired more property totally over 5,000 acres and became the largest landowner in the county. He was father to U.S. President James Madison, who inherited what he called Montpelier.

  		President James Madison Memorial at the United States Capitol Statue of President James Madison located at the Library of Congress James Madison Memorial Building. The James Madison Memorial Building of the Library of Congress is an unusual combination of a national shrine contained in a working building. In the James Madison Memorial Hall, sits a heroic statue by Walker Hancock. It depicts Madison as a man in his thirties, sitting erect in a chair that is draped with a cloak; his right foot projects beyond the statue's self base. In his right hand is a volume of the Encyclopedie Methodique, which was first on Madison's 1783 list of books that would be useful to the Congress. Hancock sculpted the statue at his Massachusetts studio, and it was carved from a 30-ton block of Carrara marble in Italy. Madison's life dates are carved on the curved front of the pink Tennessee marble pedestal.

During the course of the Convention, Madison spoke over two hundred times, and his fellow delegates rated him highly. William Pierce wrote that "... every Person seems to acknowledge his greatness. In the management of every great question he evidently took the lead in the Convention ... he always comes forward as the best informed Man of any point in debate." Madison recorded the unofficial minutes of the convention, and these have become the only comprehensive record of what occurred.

  		"Hoisting of American Colors over Louisiana" Painting depicting first raising of the USA flag with the Louisiana Purchase, in main plaza (now Jackson Square), New Orleans. Ceremony was March 10, 1804 [1] Painted by Thure de Thulstrup on commission to commemorate centennial of the event. The painting has been praised for the research and historical accuracy which went into the period depiction. Painting is on display in the Cabildo Museum. Painted in 1904 by Thure de Thulstrup (1848-1930).
