Whether it was professionally designing centers for the elderly, civically guiding park-district process; or politically pushing for a new minor league baseball stadium--the Beaverton city councilor relished making big decisions and turning "nos' into "yeses." All of which made his deth Wednesday from debillitating lung cancer bittersweet for thos closest to him, who watched him lose control and suffer... Doctors diagnosed Dalrymple, 58, with inoperable, stage four lung cancer in January, months after he successfully battle skin cancer, his wife said... Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle said... "we're going to miss his 40,000-foot visions for the city... he's always been able to keep reminding us we need to look at the future. Dalrymple joined the Beaverton City Council in 2006... he also served on the Tualitin Hills Park & Recreation District board of directors for nearly 20 years and held a spot on Washington County's Planning Commission, among other positions. Last year, Dalrymple served as Beaverton City Council president and advocated building a taxpayaer-backed baseball stadium for the Portland Beavers...he really pushed himself to try to accomplish something, City Councilor Catherine Arnold said. "I really admire him for doing that, in the face of all his personal health struggles." Dalrymple spen his youth in the San Diego area, playing baseball in the sun, surfing in the Pacific Ocean and nurturing his growning love of sports cars. He moved back to Portland, where he was born, to attend Portland State University. Beyond his community involvement, Dalrymple worked for 30yrs at Beaverton-based Touchmark, where he led construction and development as an executive vice president. Company founder Werner Nistler Mr. described a younger Dalrymple as very confident, honest and hard working. He was an awesom partner and a best friend... about 25 years ago, Dalrymple beat Hodgkin's lymphoma and he took his health seriously ever since, his wife said. But at the time Dalrymple was warned that his radiation treatment could potentially lead to lung cancer later in his life, she said. Bruce Dalrymple, who enjoyed golfing with his wife and driving the cars in his Porsche collection, fell short of breath last summer. He found it hard to walk in his Murryhill neighborhood. When his condition worsended in December, doctorsoriginally thought it was pneumonia. It wasn't until they drained fluid from his lung, his wife said, that the doctors confirmed diagnosis, adenocarcinoma. Doctors from the Knight Cancer Institute at University of Oregon Health & Science University performed surgery to help with the fluid, but it didn't work.
