History of Jefferson City, Missouri's State Capital and of Cole County, by James E Ford pg 587: "William M Zuendt... As a young man he became associated with his father-in-law, Christ Wagner in the wholesale grocery business of this city. He married Antonia Wagner, daughter of Christ Wagner, in 1879. Christ Wagner, a veteran of the Mexican War and a lieutenant in the Union army in the Civil War, was the son of Paul Wagner who came from Munich, Bavaria, and settled 8 miles east of Jefferson City where he built what is said to have been the first brewery in Cole County.
Christ Wagner became a baker by trade. He went to the Pacific Coast in the gold rush of 1849 and there acquired considerable wealth. He was elected treasurer of Cole County in 1862, and again in 1870. He was a personal friend of Governor Stewart, Joseph Pulitzer, and many prominent Missourians...

Jefferson City People's Tribune, 11 Oct 1876, pg3: "We are proud to record the fact that at the great St Louis fair, our fellow-citizen, Chris. Wagner carried off a premium on his Goethe wine. Where there were so many competitors and the competition coming from districts devoted especially to the culture of the grape, it is indeed gratifying to know that Cole ranked as high as the best."

1881 DEATH,BURIAL: MO,Cole Co-Russelville: Christopher Wagner was killed 18 December 1881, while aboard the newly built railroad; funeral at home of Mrs S W Scovern on High Street 21 December 1881; buried Woodland Cemetery, Jefferson City, Missouri.
Funeral Notice: Yourself and family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of Christopher Wagner, from the residence of Mrs. S W Scovern, on High Street, this afternoon at half-past 2 o'clock. Jefferson City, Mo., December 21, 1881.

"The St. Louis, Jefferson City and Kansas Railway was graded as far as Russellville in July, 1881, and on August 17 a bridge was completed across the Moreau and construction train running.
December 18th of that year, a wreck on this newly built railroad killed Christopher Wagner, Green C. Berry and Oscar Monnig outright and fatally injured Chris Gemeinhardt and Willie Zuendt. All were prominent in the business life of the city and county."

LETTERS FROM CALIF to Paulus and family while Christoph was in California. Copies from Paul LePage 3/1991. Originals transcribed by Lucille Zuendt. Letter included:
1. death of bro William sometime before letter 24 April 1851, in Cal.(Mtn fever, unable to speak or leave instructions. Sick short time, very thin. Keepsakes returned to Paulus [must not have been md].
2. He inquired about his brother-in-laws, Wuger and ...Also said he had inquired about brother-in-law's brother Hoslach from Osage County who has a brewery 3 miles from Marysville. Mr Weiss's brother-in-law Hofur lives 12-15 miles from there.
3. Another letter mentions John Doehla, that he will stay in Trinity River and sends greetings to his parents and relatives.
4. Places mentioned in letters: Georgetown (El Dorado Co), Weavertown 1850 (not exist now-Trinity Co-Weaverville?), Union City 4-1851 (Alameda Co), Placerville (SF Co), Sacramento (Sac Co), Marysville (Sutter Co). Rivers: Scott, Trinity, Yuba, Feather.
NOTES: Said Christ built a home on corner of Moreau Drive [1122] and Vineyard Square, that it was still standing in 1955. But an article in "Post Tribune" Jeff City, June 21, 1989, said the house was built by the 8th governor of Missouri, John C. Edwards and used during the Civil War. After, it was sold to Chris Wagner [16 Oct 1864and Andrew Gundlefinger. The property was name Vineyard Place after Mayme Vineyard, who owned the home from 1934-1965. CHECK OUT.
Wm Zuendt moved to Riverview when wife died.
