      Jan 1956 letter from Gladys Pearson Finley to Mary Marks #37: "She was our first grandchild & I think she was 22 on last Jun 21st. She was the mother of 3 very young children-2 boys 4 1/2 & 3 1/2 and a little girl 1 1/2... Our dau Fern & husb are raising them... We all felt very sad, giving her up so young & everyone sd she was such a sweet little mother and so happy with her husband & children.
      She had a rheumatic heart. Her death brought the first break in all our own family of children and grandchildren. My dau says she does not grieve a lot, for she lived as she wanted to, although it was known since she was 16 that she had rheumatic heart. For the following yr her mother followed the specialist's orders for a complete bed rest.
      Then she married and got to having attacks this year again. My daughter moved back near her to help her take care of the children, but I guess such a condition as hers, the heart just wears out or having children is too great a strain."
