We have no money now but the pure suff goale and sillver goale pieces from 1Dollar to 50 (ct.?) And Coming from California Continueally as it respects money matters Times is a great deal better than it was when you wars heare.       I, George Smith, of Scottsville, Sullivan County, make this my last will. I give, devise and bequeath my estate and property, real and personal, that is to say:
      First, I give an bequeath unto my wife, Mahala Smith, the following real estate towit: Lots 1,2,3 and 4 in Block no. 1 in the town of Scottsville and all the household and kitchen furniture and also one choice cow and $1000 to be kept on interest for the use of my wife. She can use the principal if necessary and at her death, to be divided equally among my living children.
      And I bequeath to my son, James F Smith (dec'd) and his dau Elizabeth, the sum of $200. And I bequeath unto my son Albert J Smith,dec'd,his 4 children as follows: Mary B Smith the sum of $200, & Laura J Smith the sume of $200, & Marcus M Smith the sum of $200, and Rosa G(J) Smith the sum of $200, and Matilda F Smith the sum of $5.00.
      And I bequeath unto my dau Nancy E Scott, dec'd, 2 children as follows: Minnie F Scott, the sum of $200 and Mahala J Scott the sum of $200.
      And I want all my property sold, and after paying funeral expenses and all just debts, I want the balance equally divided between my five children, William R Smith, Thomas H Smith, Lurinda F(I,J) Fields, Ann E Thurlo, and Mary C Thurlo.
      I appoint Thomas H Smith and Columbus Thurlo of Sullivan County, Missouri, executors of this my will. In witness whereof I have signed and sealed and published and declared this instrument as my last will at Scottsville on the 20th day of March 1883. George X (his mark) Smith

      1901 HISTORY: Nat Archives 692.296 #10, by Belle Atkins, affidavit re Albert Jackson Smith pension 3 April 1901, ...taken at 2 1/2 miles west of Reger, Sullivan Co MO: "Father's parents are dead. Had 8 children-4 daughters & 4 sons. Only 3 living: Lorinda Fields of Humphrey; Mrs A N Thurlo of Carroll Co (Bogard or Tina), husb name Silas Thurlo a farmer; Mary C Thurlo living 1 mile this side of Scottsville. PO Browning. Grandparents old and feeble when died. Not know dates. Father's brothers: Thomas H-died near Humphrey; William R died Boone Co; James Smith-not know where died. Nancy E Scott 4th sister and died in Kansas. Not know what died of."
