      c1874-1883 HIST by Jack Eads, abt 1955, typed sheets to Mary Marks, Eads doc #12: "Lived on Baker Creek, 8 miles back in the sticks. Went to school at the 41 school house built by donations of neighbors. Taking great pride in the library programs and at 12 yrs became a champion speller of the neighborhood. At one time at a contest of 3 schools, consisting of Panther Creek, Deer Creek, and the Old Happy Valley 41 School, I was the hero of the contest by spelling a word of two syllables that you will find in the Webster Dictionary Page 25. Sorry there are but few to recall this incident, but the old goodnatured Clara Gillman and Katie Casey were the teachers that went down and the old Professor C. C. Linden was the Pronouncer. The word was epergne. Other events of importance that took place was I captured a wild half-groan deer, exhausted from the chase of the old famous Amzey Shadden hounds, hidden in the water and brush a few hunded yards from our house..."

      c1883-1886 HIST [continued #12]: "at the age of 15 I went to Vancouver, WA [then a territory where they all went to get married and the population was badly scattered. Few citizens of Vancouver little dreamed of there being such a thing as a bridge built across the great Columbia River...]"

      1886 HIST [cont'd #12]: "I went to work with my 2 brothers John & Dell east of the mountains. Worked for the Gillman Bros, at one time cattle kings of that part of the country... employed for 2 yrs as a range boy and a bronco buster. In 1888 they branded 36,000 calves with John Putnam as foreman..."

      1889 HIST [cont'd #12]: "In the fall of 1889 I went to Canyon City. Played poker with the miners where my Uncle Bill Gray was sheriff..."

      1902 MARRIAGE & HIST [#12]: "I was md to Rosanna Flood, a minister's daughter... one son, Victor, was born. I hauled freight from Heppner to Canyon City (100 miles) for 5 years.
      Built the cut-off road in the Wall Creek, owned and operated the horse and buggy stage line between Hardman in Morrow Co and Monument in Grant Co.
      I owned and raced the well known race horse, Little Dutch, that was famous in all kinds of weather..."

      1955 HIST: Small note in Mary Mark's handwriting, doc#8a: "Jack Eads is mother's oldest brother, Henry's son, and is the only one of Henry's children living. He was 86 last yr, owns his home at Vancouver." Jack says: "I live at 1200 West 21 St, Vancouver, WA."

      ...last Sunday of July each year...a Grant Co picnic at Luralherst Park, Portland Ore... i have a nice car and would love to take you places to meet our blood relatives. i drive in daylight only. And the picture i sent you was taken in front of the duplex where i lived on May 31, 1 1/2 yrs ago...."

Aunt Mary at Otis at salman river, aunt Sarah of Palouse, uncle Jackson at palouse City, uncle Ennis, uncle Sol at ukiah and his children of Baker City... i am a full blood Eads and the oldest one i ever knew to live to bee 86 yrs old still upon my feet and able to dance the tenisee waltz with them teen age cousins if they come my way. i have 5 nieces in Portland 2 nephews
      ... i have always bin a superman-stood all the hardships through thick and thin. Looked to my brothers for advise and skill of the iola miller family my oldest sister
      ...there is a million dollar play ground park at Jensen beach just across the river where we ride the hobby horses and dance. Yes i hope to take you to see all these things when you come to visit me. Your only Uncle Jack"

      c1955 HIST [#12]: "... a turkey dinner at my house May 31 at 2 o'clock... hope to see all the Eads' families there. It will be served the old fashioned way, with coffee and refreshments... the reunion was held with 26 of the Eads family attending."
      Written in cursive under typed pages: "To my left is Don's girl, Nancy, the little tap dancer. Next to her is Don's wife, Marie and Don at extreme left with Vic between Nancy and Marie. To my right is Bill Miller, sister Iolas oldest son. The rest of them white heads are descendents of the Miller family of the little June Brigs [?? couldn't read too well] just sweet 16 of course and never bin kissed but the[y?] sang and Nancy danced and I sat at the head of the table and carved the turkey."
      Top of first sheet: "I wish to congratulate our cousin George R Eads of Shelton WA of his great art in describing the history of the Eads family. Although a little short in numbers, I mention a Nelly Gray, dau of our ex-sheriff Bill Gray of Grant Co OR and a Iola and Albert of the Henry Eads family."

      c1955 HIST: From Jack to Mary Marks, Eads doc#13: "Yes, Mary, you was Charley's favorite of the Gray family and you was mine too as you always appeared more like the Eads Blood - friendly and glad to meet your Blood relations... one more Jack Eads...
