"I am a brother of Ferdinand Wegner alias Frederick Wegner & I am positive & know that Frederick Wegner & Ferdinand Wegner are one & same person. His name Ferdinand given him by his parents & called that in childhood, but when came to America most everyone would persist in calling him Frederick although repeatedly told that his name was Ferdinand. We were partners for several years as near as I can recollect from 1874 to 1880 in blacksmith business in Oregon. The above facts are of my own knowledge. I also know of his enlistment in 3rd Batt of NJ Lt Artillery-& once during his service he came home on furlough to visit me. The Indians very likely came within a few miles of PR but never attacked the town, although there was a battle at Willow Springs. To protect the populace, Julius Wegner and others worked feverishly to erect a stockade in PR. It was located on the land where the first church building was later constructed."
Pg 204: "It has been described as being made of tall posts erected in deep holes with boards nailed on each side of the cracks; any openings were then filled with gravel. It most likely was circular in design. It had no roof. The stockade was built by the residents of PR under the direction of Julius Wegner (blacksmith), AJ Sturtevan (Gen store operator)... During the day everyone stayed outside and cooked under the shade trees. There were portholes in the stockade, and men with rifles were stationed at each."
