Took names and dates out of Bible written by Marcus's mother: Mary Bell Smith [md JW Atkins], Laurah Josephine [md Edward Bradshaw], Marcus M, Rosey Gertie [md Joseph Nickell]. Mary Bell lives about 3 miles from me, Laura lives near Unionville, Rosey lives 1 mile south of me."

      c1905 HISTORY: 1962 letter from Neva Bales, Fairbury Neb, to June Smith Hallmark: "Guess we are double cousins. Your grandmother Smith was a sister to my husband's mother and your Granddad Mark was my mother's brother. My father, late Joe Nickell, md Gerty Smith, a sister to Uncle Mark. There were 3 daus & 1 son of the family, which are all dead. I can remember when Uncle Mark and Aunt Lin left Browning MO & moved to Oregon. I believe they had 3 children, maybe 4. Princess was my brother's age. Ninnie, Hank and Vern. I am sure we have pictures of Princes & Ninnie when they were babies."

      HISTORY: June 1991 visit by Pam with mother, June Smith Hallmark: "...when family in Hermiston, they grew melons, had chickens, alfalfa; they had a work horse, which I got to ride, but none of the other grandchildren did. Marcus and Lennie lived in a small house in Hermiston: bedroom, livingroom, kitchen, pantry, back porch. At one time when June was a baby [1923-24], Vern & family lived across from the folks, where the "Y" is in the road..".
      June 1992: June Smith Hallmark: ...Grandpa Marcus had grain in the barn and would let no one play in it, except June [she said she was a favorite of Grandpa's, and he would let her ride on his horse, would put her up there and she could hardly get her legs around horse] Grandpa would irrigate at night, barefooted.
      May 1992: Kathryn Varko Smith (Leo): "Marcus and Lennie tried to prove up on a piece of land in Hermiston. Uncle Leo helped the family financially. Marcus was a good man. He was deaf. He was killed when he went out to shoot some chickens, which was his usual way of taking care of the chickens.... Leo talked about walking 3 miles to get milk for the family"

He always killed them with his rifle. Think he stumbled in a low spot of ground and shot himself. She remembered driving to town with Grandad in tears over it..."



      NOTES: Grace Mae Michael Smith August 1982: "Grandad Smith talked of Gertie. Someone tore the pages out of a Bible and sent them to the family - not too accurate."
