PIONEER RESIDENT DIED HERE SUNDAY" ...Mrs. Elizabeth Wagner, aged 82, dead at Atchison Street home after long illness CAME HERE FROM EUROPE IN 1841: MARRIED IN 1849 Husband killed in Bagnell wreck - Funeral will take place tommorrow.
Mrs. Elizabeth Wagner, one of the oldest residents in this city, died Sunday morning at 3:45 at her home on Atchison Street, after a long illness of a complication of diseases.
Elizabeth Wolfrum was born in Mussen, near Muenchberg, Ober-Franken, Bavaria, Germany, July 30 1831. She came to this country with her parents when she was 10 years of age and came immediately to Jefferson City. The voyage from the old country lasted six months and was frought with great danger, owing to storms. They landed in America on March 4th, 1842. She was married to Christ Wagner Jan 17,1849 at the old Wolfrum homestead 5 miles east of this city. The ceremony was performed by Judge Ewing, father of Ash and Clay Ewing, deceased. They made their home there for a short tme and then came to Jefferson City. Their union was blessed with seven children, two of whom, William Wagner and Mrs. Victoria Zuendt, survive her. Mrs. Wagner was among the first people to settle in Jeff City and her husband added much in the growth and prosperity of the town. Mr. Wagner was at one time treasurer of Cole County and was also a veteran of the Mexican War.
Many of the older residents remember the sad accident on the Bagnell Branch in Dec 1881, when Mr. Wagner, his son-in-law, Mr. Zuendt, Green Berry, Oscar Monnig and Christ Gemeinhardt were among those killed.
She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, as follows: Christ J.S. Wagner of this city, Christ Wagner of near Osage, Conrad and Elsie Wagner, Mrs. Emil Schneider, Mrs. Fred Mueller, Mrs. William Zuendt of this city and Louis Scovern, Mrs. Nellie Noble and Mrs. Mamie Ferris of California and Chas. Scovern of Louisiana. She also had several great-grandchildren. She has other relatives throughout this country.
There were few women in this county who were so well known and so well liked as was Mrs. Wagner. She had a large acquaintance and by her grace and charming manner made a large circle of friends. Her death removes another of our pioneers who saw te city grow from a mere village to a city of size and proportion. Her death is keenly regretted throughout the county.
She was a good and consistent member of the German Evangelical Central Church, from where the funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Hoffman will conduct services at the home, at the church and at the grave.
The Daily Post," V 5, Jefferson City, MO, Monday, 12 May 1913, also in the "Jefferson City Democrat Tribune" 12 May 1913, said she died at home of William Zuendt.
