16058 Obituary:

Leon Packer Taylor
KALISPELL - Leon Packer Taylor passed away on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at the Brendan House in Kalispell after a brief battle with cancer.

Leon was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Preston, Idaho, to Vaughn Franklin and Anna Parkinson (Packer) Taylor.

He attended schools in the Weston, Idaho, area and at age 15 entered a job training program in Logan, Utah, in general metals. He found that he had a great talent for welding and this proved to direct the course of his career for the rest of his life. He got a job as a welder in a shipyard in California and then joined the Navy and was a welder on an aircraft carrier, the USS Corrigador, for about 2 1/2 years during World War II.

Leon married Loretta Rae Griffiths on March 18, 1943, in Weston, Idaho. They were sealed in the Logan (Utah) Temple of The Church of Latter-day Saints on Nov. 16, 1945.

After a short stay in California, Leon and Loretta bought a farm in Preston, Idaho, and then a potato farm in Whitehall. After a short stay in Butte, they moved to Missoula in 1959 where Leon worked for Western Foundry, welding parts for bridge beams. In 1969, Leon started working for the Champion International Paper Mill in Missoula where he worked for 20 years as a maintenance supervisor and did specialized maintenance on boilers.

In 1979, the Taylors moved to Pablo, beginning 22 fun-filled years of retirement.

In 1983, Leon had a stroke, paralyzing the left side of his body. After extensive therapy and great determination, he regained some movement on the left side of his face and leg. He used this difficult experience to help others with similar experiences. He understood their struggles and had a joke and a golf cart ride ready to lift their spirits.

In 1987, Leon and Loretta began wintering in Mesa, Ariz., and summering in Montana.

Leon's greatest joys were his family and making people laugh.

He and Loretta recently spent their 60th wedding anniversary in Hawaii with their children.

Leon was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors of Montana.

His family and friends will miss him very much.

16078 Obvious Connection between Micah and Ziba Adams

Ziba Adams b 2 Apr 1788 in Plainfield NH studied medicine from Micah at the same school - Micah studied medicine. Ziba married Hanna Pattee in Goffstown, Hillsborough, NH and moved on to Morgan County OH. Micah married his first wife in Morgan County, OH.

It is possible that they are brother or first cousins. I could not, however, locate the parents of either of them.

Here is more detail.

Micah and Ziba Adams can both be found in the U.S. High School Student Lists, 1821-1923 on Ancestry.com for the book The General Catalogue and a Brief History of Kimball Union Academy, Plainfield, (Meriden P.O.) N.H.: also a Biographical Sketch of Hon. Daniel Kimball, its founder. 1815-1880.

Micah is listed on page 34 under Students 1816.

Azariah Adams and Ziba Adams are both listed under 1819 - page 41.

......

Less obvious connection -

Micaiah Adams born 11 Feb 1728. There was some speculation that Micajah and Elizabeth (see myfamilyonline.com for this family) could be grandparents to Micah - they are from Plainfield Connecticut not New Hampshire. The Academy does not specify the state of people born in Plainfield but can be assumed NH since the school is in Plainfield NH. It is always possible though that the family moved from Connecticut.

ReformedHistory of Samuel Bloom family gave wife's last name as Dunkleberg
Genealogy chart of Ellis Bloom gave name as Rebecca Hash
LDS Family Hist Center, PAF files give a family group sheet for samuel Bloom and Anna Maria dunkelberger who had a child, Samuel Bloom, Jr birth date of 1791 instead of 1804Northumberland County information (Meiser & Meiser) for Samuel Bloom, Jr gives 1791 birth date and dying 1871 in Akron, Ohio. Children of Samuel Bloom are listed as Samuel (1791), John(1793), Daniel (1798), William (1802-1805), Catherine (1807), Jacob (1809), Magdalena (1811), Elizabeth (1813), Heinrich (1815)Genealogical & Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, 1911, gives children of Samuel Bloom & Magdalena Dunkelberger as John (no date), Daniel (1798), William (1802), Samuel (no date), Jacob (no date), Henry (no date), Catherine (no date), Elizabeth (1813). If order is correct, 1804 would be reasonable datefor Samuel Jr birth.Personal notes of Florence Thilly (Northumberland Hist Soc) give wife as Magdalena Dunkelberger and Samuel Bloom Jr birthdate 1804.Bloom family bible gives Samuel Bloom Jr birthdate as 1804 with marriage to Mary Campbell.According to Northumberland Co Hist Soc (Letter, Jack R Pensyl, Dec 17, 1999) Augustaville Zion Lutheran Church records start 1812, Church is older, but no baptism records are available."The Dunkelberger Family in America", Shirley Turner, 1980, estimates birthdate of Samuel Bloom, Jr as about 1791 with no additional information. This date is also given in Meissner & Meissner.I had suggested that there may be a confusion of two different Samuel Blooms. Pensyl (op cit) stated that Samuel Bloom Sr had no sibling brothers so could not have had a cousin Samuel (This contradicts information from JW Love)Will of Samuel Bloom Sr names ten children (A daughter, Mary, was not included in either Biographical Annals or Messner & Meissner). The order of naming children accords with such dates as are given in the Biographical Annals and I assume is the correct order of birth. If this is the case, the 1804 birth date for Samuel, Jr would appear to be correct. Also Samuel received $200 from his father to be set against his share of the estate and several others received land to offset their share of the estate. My evaluation of the aove is that the 1804 birthdate for Samuel Jr is correct. I consider the question closed.occupation: farmer, various county offices, justice of the peace,

Six generations of De Bows lived in the house until it was sold out of the family hands in 1924.

16100 Okolona
Location: Chickasaw County

Campaign: Meridian and Yazoo River Expeditions (1864)

Date(s): February 22, 1864

Principal Commanders: Brig. Gen. William Sooy Smith [US]; Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest [CS]

Forces Engaged: Cavalry force (7,000) [US]; Forrest's Cavalry Corps [CS]

Estimated Casualties: 150 total (US 100; CS 50)

Description: From Vicksburg, Mississippi, Sherman launched a campaign to take the important railroad center at Meridian, Mississippi, and if the situation were favorable, to push on to Selma, Alabama, and threaten Mobile. Sherman ordered Brig. Gen. William Sooy Smith to lead a cavalry force of 7,000 men from Memphis, Tennessee, on February 1, 1864, south through Okolona, along the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, and to meet the rest of the Union force at Meridian, on February 10. With the main force of approximately 20,000 men, Sherman set out on the 3rd for Meridian, but made feints on various other locations. Against orders, Smith delayed ten days, while waiting for reinforcements, and did not start out until February 11. Destroying crops and railroad track along the way, Smith’s force met almost no opposition, and, before long, 1,000 former slaves were traveling with them. Smith was supposed to rendezvous with Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman at Meridian on the 10th, but he never arrived there. Sherman left Meridian on the 20th, due in part to apprehension over Smith’s whereabouts. Smith neared West Point, 90 miles north of Meridian, on the 20th, and he fought with Confederate cavalry units at Prairie Station and Aberdeen. Smith—knowing that Nathan Bedford Forrest commanded the troops he was fighting, concerned about the fate of the former slaves with him, and not knowing how many of the enemy he faced—decided to concentrate at Prairie Station, and, on the morning of the 21st, he set out for West Point. Shortly after dawn on the 21st, Col. Jeffrey Forrest’s Confederate cavalry brigade engaged Smith. Withdrawing at times, Forrest drew Smith into a swamp west of the Tombigbee River. Other Rebel troops arrived and the fighting intensified. Smith was sure that this was a trap set for him, and, discerning that he was greatly outnumbered, he ordered a retreat, leaving a rearguard. The rearguard held off the Confederates for about two hours before withdrawing in good order. About the same time, Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived and ordered a pursuit. Skirmishing occurred the rest of the day. At sunup on the 22nd, the Rebels attacked Smith just south of Okolona on the prairie. More Confederate troops arrived, causing breaks in the Union battle line, precipitating a retreat. For most of the rest of the day, they engaged in a running battle for a distance of eleven miles, with both sides attacking and counterattacking. Col. Forrest was killed during one Rebel charge. The Yankees finally broke off the fighting and headed for Pontotoc. Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the commander on the field, realized that his men were nearly out of ammunition and did not order a pursuit. Mississippi militia harassed Smith to the state line. Smith arrived in Collierville, Tennessee, near Memphis, on the 26th. Although Smith had caused much destruction during his expedition, Okolona forced him to retire before he could do more. Smith’s actions against Sherman’s orders jeopardized the Meridian Expedition.

Result(s): Confederate victory
