I am the son of JOHN RAY YOUNG born 4/30/1837 and his wife TAMAR JANE BLACK born 5/1/1852, died 7/31/1915 married 5/9/1870 (2)grandson of LORENZO DOW YOUNG born 10/19/1807, died 11/21/1895 and his wife PERSIS GOODALL born 3/15/1805, died 9/16/1894, married 6/6/1826 (3) great-grandson of JOHN YOUNG born 3/6/1763, died 10/12/1839 and his wife AGIGAIL HOWE born 5/3/1766, died 6/11/1815, married 10/31/1786 JOHN YOUNG is the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of soldier, a volunteer without pay. Private, Mass. Militia. My Ancestor's services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows: I have heard my father, JOHN RAY YOUNG, say that JOHN YOUNG, when the war began, was living with his uncle, possibly, WILLIAM, born 1 June 1753, who was a doctor. There were members of the minute men. When the call came they left a yoke of oxen standing in the field where they were plowing, and went on duty. They donated their services. At a JOHN YOUNG family gathering on 6 Mar 1942, a daughter of BRIGHAM YOUNG said, 'Records show that JOHN YOUNG wintered at Valley Forge, and crossed the Delaware River with Washington and took part in the battle that followed against the British." Paterson, for six months service (travel 200 miles). Again enlisted in Capt. John Hayward's Co. Col. Webb's regiment. Time August 23, 1781 to Dec. 1st 1781 (200 miles travel) home in the Hopkinton town records are the following entries: 'This may certify that JOHN YOUNG, the bearer hereof, late a soldier for six months in the 2nd. Mass. Regiment has not drawn any article of clothing out of the public store house during his service. Robert Muzzy, Lt. West Point 15 Dec 1780' 'Also: Fishkill, Dec 2, 1780, JOHN YOUNG, a soldier of Col. Webb's Regiment of Militia, is hereby discharged from the service he having fulfilled his time like a good soldier. It is the family tradition that John's father Joseph was a physician and surgeon in the French and Indian Wars. Joseph's father William was a worshipper in the Old South Church. Boston, where his children were christened by Rev. Peter Thacher, he was one of the founders of Barrington and Nottingham N.H, but sold all his holding there in 1724-5.
